Thread: Devon Energy Center

  1. Default Re: Devon Energy Center (Devon Tower)

Yeah, that confirms my rough calculation. I didn't have much doubt about that. I just want to see it rooted in Midtown next to the ESB. Personally I think that would be a far more impressive comparison than a schematic where it's the smallest building on the page. Devon would be roughly tied with the 10th-tallest finished building in NYC, a city with thousands of relatively tall structures.

It's not so much how it compares to the ESB, it's how it compares to everything else.

By coincidence, 30 Rock is 850,' so the vantage point would be fairly similar. I started to use the Devon Tower from your night shot, but it would just look too weird stuck in this daytime view.

The distance between 49th St and 34th is 7/10 of a mile, and it looks like you were about the same from Devon. That angle would be close to perfect.

By my quick calculations (who knows, I might be wrong), Devon would reach the first setback from the main building profile, towering over almost everything in Midtown except the ESB itself (Chrysler, BofA, Citigroup would show up in wider shots). The cabs of the Devon Tower cranes would be close to the roofline of the ESB. That just trips me the heck out.

Shot this in late October 2011. Closest I have to something that would work for you. I'm aiming for a late Tuesday flight next week, weather permitting. Shooting for 2 different clients now instead of 1 so it'll be about a 3 hour flight. Tons great pics on the way.

Next Tuesday is dry with a high of 62, so probably 47-53 when you go out for your flight and should be clear. Although a few wisps of clouds would be nice for a background.

That's a great picture, but I do think that they need to demolish the Cox Center and replace it with something more aesthetically pleasing. Just a thought, but maybe the city could extend the canal into that location and give it a proper ending, while building commercial structures or condos around it. Perhapes another tall skyscraper location along the extended canal?

If they destroy the Cox Center what will happen to our hockey team?

They will be destroyed! nooo lol. They could always go to the Chesapeake arena..we've done that before, they need to wait until the new CC is built, then they can tear it up

The only reason I can think of to keep Cox is to bid on Big 12 basketball tournaments. They like 2 arenas nearby for men's and women's. Although there's been talk of splitting them up. If they stay together, with Mizzou leaving the conference, OKC has a great case to host both tourneys.

I would rather have 4 new blocks of developable downtown space than the Big XII tournament.

I believe it hosts a lot more than the occasional B12 tournament.

There is not enough open dates to put the hockey along with the Thunder, too much schedule conflict.....

    Maybe hockey isn't urban enough.

In a decade, the Cox arena will be leveled and Maps VI will build a great new arena development where the cotton mill is, and the canal will run to the front of it. Blocks will be reclaimed downtown for a 50 story hotel/condo/apartment project and some will still bitch that the new arena will take up too much space near Bricktown. That's what my crystal ball sees

I would love to be on Maps VI in a decade, but Maps IV is probably closer to reality :-/.

And Hockey is super urban . The playing field is built right up next to the seats, and the rink is a mixed-use development.

The NHL/AHL and NBA share arenas all over the country. It only takes a few hours to reconfigure the arena for each sport.

And we would continue to lose entertainment events like concerts to Tulsa and Wichita.

When the Thunder played in New Jersey last Saturday the New Jersey Devils (NHL) had played a home game in the same arena just a few hours prior to the Nets-Thunder game.

The Staples Center in LA hosts TWO NBA teams, an NHL team and still features many big concerts.

I live in Wichita and I can promise you that OKC is not losing many entertainment events to Wichita. There is a nice, new arena here and there is crap to see in it. With the BOK and Cain's Tulsa obviously pulls a lot of stuff.

We lost to Tulsa because we don't have anything like Cains, AND the main reason was because the Ford Center was under construction the last 2+ years and the TEMPORARY loss of shows was expected. Plenty of larger cities share NHL/NBA/concerts under the same roof, we are no exception.

Only for 4 months out out of the year. AA Arena in Dallas host NBA, NHL, and concerts all the time. I have previously posted video of AA hosting NBA, NHL, a concert, and a rodeo in 36 hours.

Here is a video of 4 events in 6 days just for an example. These quick change videos are a dime a dozen on youtube.

I remember when the Thunder announced this summer that they would play a pre-season game at the new arena in Wichita, the fans up there were so excited. They were really complaining of having the new InTrust arena I believe it's called, and hardly anything was booked for it.
Then the preseason got cancelled a couple of months later.......and they had one less event to see.
