When Will KOCO and FOX25 Go HD?

It's been a long time since the other stations went High-Definition, but KOCO and FOX25 continue to lag. Anyone have any inside info on when these stations are going to move to HD?

FOX23 in Tulsa is already HD, and I think I read they had a new set design too.

I was referring to the newscasts. I know they installed a new antenna a while back, and they have a beautiful signal already, so I look forward to seeing what HD will do for them.

Network programming...yes. Newscasts...no. They have been broadcasting their newscasts in Wide Screen Standard Definition (SD) 16:9 format for over a year now. While some may think it's HD because it fills up the entire screen, it is still only standard def.

Well, I guess the problem is that HD costs too many million$ of dollars for some stations to fully embrace at the local level.

To me, the local stations ought to be able to make money by using their sub channels to broadcast major, popular cable channels, such as FOX and ESPN, and so freeing many people from having to subscribe to cable. The cost of cable is getting out of hand. They sometimes like to add new channels, but who has added time to watch them? But I reckon the main downfall to that, other than vehement objections from cable companies, is that the sub channels aren't able to broadcast in HD. Right?

My bet would be once they get the cash from the influx of political ads this year. HD is a huge investment even for large companies like Hearst.

Meh, political adds don't make as much $$$ in this state as some may think. Only swing states get good $$$, otherwise politicians usually avoid spending money in states that are not gonna swing.

I agree. They shoot 'em tight, and the result is stunning. Compare the shots on KOCO to the shots on KFOR sometime. Huge difference in how they frame the shots.

Anyway, still no one has stepped up and told us if/when either station is going to make the move to HD, so I'm guessing the employees have been threatened with their lives if they reveal it.

It'll be funny if their picture quality goes down after they switch. LOL They probably blew the HD budget on the helicopter, or perhaps they are waiting on building a new set for it.

Yeah, you just never know. I actually think KWTV wasted its money on that new set years ago. It does not yield shots any better than those on KOCO, and look at who is winning the ratings lately, it's KFOR with probably the ugliest set in local news. I also like the FOX25 "natural" set, but I bet that goes away someday when they go HD.

all of the syndicated program that channel 5 airs is in HD so they might be working on the getting HD cameras

Yeah good point. I do find it funny that KWTV is hurting in the ratings compared to the other two. I do tend to wonder if their aggressive political/religious slant is a turn off. It does seem they wasted a lot of money for the new set especially when many of the shots just seem awkward.

I do give them credit for giving us far better shots today than they did when the set was brand new. That was the worst year of newscast viewing I've ever had. Now, many times KWTV shots are just as good as those on KOCO.

I saw a comment on Facebook today that told me FOX25 was in the process of moving to HD. I did not see a timetable. I haven't picked up any word on KOCO.

And as for the ratings (mentioned in post #17), I wish they'd publish them like they used to. It's a shame they feel the need to keep them so secret. From the promos that the stations run, KFOR is winning all the time in every slot. Go figure. KWTV cannot be happy about this, since they used to have some serious bragging rights to the 10pm win.

I would think the next two logical times to switch to HD for Fox25 and KOCO would be the Feb or May sweeps. Especially for KOCO to be high def by severe weather season. Sky5 really needs a HD camera!

Maybe when Fox 25 goes HD, they will have a new set, they had the same set since they started the news back in 1996, and maybe they will get a new logo.

Fox 25 is still not in HD and we are a quarter of the way through 2013.

Does anybody know when they might go HD if at all? What's interesting is the news teasers are in HD yet the actual newscasts are not.

Houston's 4 major newscasts were all in HD as far back as 2007.

Their promos have been in HD for a while. Their newscasts are still in 4:3 SD.

I wonder why they couldn't at least go widescreen SD like KOCO has?
