Thread: Saab (1937 - 2011)

    Default Saab (1937 - 2011)

The Swedish automobile manufacturer filed for bankruptcy protection today in a move that is expected to end the company's 74-year history, beginning as an airplane manufacturer.

I owned two Saabs, the first being a 1986 900 Turbo. When that turbo kicked in on especially cold days, the accelleration was something to behold. The car sacrificed itself for me when a motorist tried to turn left in front of us. The engine separated from the chassis and transmission (designed to fall to the street where it would go under the car instead of into the footwells), and the fuel system sealed itself, preventing a fire.

Saab made quirky and fun cars, well-engineered and ahead of their time, but they couldn't compete with the better-capitalized and -marketed cars that flooded the class. Sorry to see it go.

The Saab aerospace/defense company, from which the car company was spun off, is still in business, so the name at least won't die.

A ubiquitous sign of the '80s: the Saab 900.

BRI on Broadway Extention was a SAAB dealer, they were also an Alfa Romeo dealer at one time.. The Sonnett is still an interesting little car, 2-stroke V4 in the one that I drove.

The SAAB 900 (1978-1998) was their mainstay.

Of all of the vanity plates I've seen over the years, one of my favorites was seen on a late 80's Saab 900 that read "SNAAB".

Oops - It appears that ALL warranties - including those on unsold cars sitting on dealer lots - will not be honored.

So if you need cheap - and I mean CHEAP - wheels, I think you can pick up a new or used Saab for a new low, low price.

No kidding. Makes me wish I was in the market.
