The projects for Tulsa’s next 3rd penny capital improvements plan is before the council now, public vote is likely in April. The list is a total of $437 million in projects.

Overview:

Total: $437 million

How long: Six years and two months.

When: Mayor Bill LaFortune wants to put it before voters April 4.

What it contains:
$63,916,000 for public safety and protection.

$42,710,000 for cultural development and recreation.

$13,000,000 for downtown, economic and neighborhood development.

$185,440,000 for public works and transportation.

$58,035,000 for administration and support.

$71,275,000 in leftover projects from the 2001 extension.

$2,624,000 in advance bond funding costs.

Major projects:

$19 million for the Zink Lake Riverfront Development, 16 million for a new Tulsa
Police Department laboratory and property room,

$22 million for improvements on Yale Avenue between 81st and 91st streets, and

11 million for public facilities maintenance

As part of the next 3rd penny bond is money to buy an apartment building that is across the street from the new BOk Center. The Tulsa Development Authority owns most of the rest of the block and the mayor is reportedly is in talks with Hammonds Hotels and the Hard Rock Hotels chain to use the block as a hotel site.

The city council passed a slightly different version of the package this week for a total package of $463 million, highlights are $3 million for downtown housing, $5 million for a new downtown parking garage, $125 million for streets and $16 million for more improvements and commercial development in Riverparks. Vote is May 9th.

With the $162 million school bond passed last November, the $250 city property tax bond issue passed last April, the $62 million county bond issue passed in December and the $530 million Vision2025 package, when Tulsa passes this issue the city will be currently investing nearly $1.5 BILLION in public improvements, not counting any state or federal money.

How much is this going to raise your overall sales tax to? Yours was already significantly higher than most other cities.

Um, no news about the hotel, the money to buy the Towerview apartment building was dropped as the new owners don't want to sell and are redoing to the building into upscale apartments, construction is supposed to start very soon.

Some on TulsaNow have said that news on the new privately funded downtown MLS soccer stadium and related housing complex in the southern part of the East Village area of downtown and the new hotel (which can still be situated next to the Towerview as TDA owns three quarters of that square block) should both be out very soon and have been politically timed to be announced before the upcoming general election for mayor.

As for the sales taxes, they are not going up, this is a renewal of the 3rd penny sales tax for the city, not a new tax.
