Maybe I'm not understanding what you're talking about. He performed in the lobby in addition to the auditorium? Was recording the concert allowed?

It was an AMAZING show. Here's what happened.

The audience was seated, ready for the Punch Brothers when someone working for the Civic Center introduced the show. He gave a good news/bad news kinda deal. He said the bad news was that Paul Simons soundboard was having problems and that they would use the house equipment. Then he said, the good news is that Mr. Simon would be performing in the lobby before the show, his idea. So a rush to the lobby ensued and people were peering over the surrounding balconies. Truly cool. This set was mostly from his & Garfunkel days. He started with Me & Julio, Mrs. Robinson(w/ the Punch Brothers), The Boxer (w/ Punch), then Cecilia.

After a short while and the audience returning to their seats, the Punch Brothers played. I was REALLY looking forward to them. I've been a Chris Thile fan for a while now. I'm anxious to see them as headliners. I really wanted them to play longer.

Simon took the stage, and the crowd was really into it. He played it all! 2 encores. Played nearly 3 hours of music including the lobby set.

What blows my mind is that ANYONE could have walked into the lobby and watched that part for free!

recording was not allowed, but there were probably a couple of hundred cell phones out in the lobby. and just because they say no recording doesn't mean it's not happening

thanks for the link. when i checked you tube yesterday that video wasn't on there. i'm glad the person who shared them did so in HQ. i hope they share the other two songs.

I didn't know the Punch Bros. were the opening act. Dang...I'm sorry I missed that. I'm a big Chris Thile fan, too. First saw him at Winfield when he was with Nickel Creek and only one of them was old enough to drive. LOL

My sweet wife and I actually drove all the way over to MWC not all that long ago--relatively speaking--to see Nickel Creek in concert and watch Chris Thile prancing all over the stage like he was trying out for Riverdance or sumpin'.

But to witness Paul Simon playing some tunes in the lobby . . .
    Well . . . Words fail me.

Except I probably would have been the redneck in the crowd hollerin' out . . .
Play "Homeward Bound" . . . "For Emily Wherever I May Find Her"

Of course, the second one requires the presence of Art Garfunkel . . .
    But so it goes . . .

    All [envious . . . envy-ous?] "commentary" aside . . .

I am glad--in fact, even happy--that Paul Simon's appearance in OKC was even more that any of us could have expected it to be. In fact, I am--dare I say it?-- OverJoyed. =)

    Hey . . . If Ladysmith ain't available . . . The Punch Bros. would be an acceptable alternative . . . =)
Especially when compared to Lady Gaga . . .

(So . . . Just out of curiosity . . . When was it--historically speaking--when "society" began to sort of "worship" Troubidours?
For sure it was before Frank Sinatra . . . Was it around the time of Mario Lanza? =)

It more likely could be considered around the time of Rudy Vallee or Al Jolson.

I'm not a Paul Simon fan, but cudos to him for appreciating his fans. We need more entertainers like him!

Nearly a week later, I can't get over how great this concert was. It was kind of a bridge between great musicians/songwriters of the past with great musicians/songwriters of the future.

In addition to, arguably, the greatest mandolin player today (Chris Thile) playing for The Punch Brothers, they also claim the best banjo player. Noam Pikelny was voted by all of the other great banjo players living today (Earl Scruggs, Bela Fleck, Steve Martin etc...) as the best in 2010. It was pretty amazing to see them share the stage.

And then what more is there to say about Paul Simon. He's had hits for the past 6 decades.

Oklahoma City needs to bring in more shows like these. While the Civic Center isn't Radio City Music Hall, it can very well be in that tier of venues across the US.

Don't get me started on other concert venues here. I'll make my way to that thread in due time..but back to the Civic Center.

I'd like to see them give a band/artist a shot at the big time. A show that elevates someone to the biggest level. Commission a concert with completely original material written for the occasion from someone on the verge of hitting big. While we don't have a premier mid-sized venue like Cains in Tulsa, we have great venue like the Civic Center that is underutilized.
