    Default Beans and Cornbread

So who else has a pot of beans cooking today? Instead of a ham hock, I put in 2lbs of pulled pork.

Nope, but woke up to a big pot of tater soup in the fridge that weren't there when I went to sleep. Was real happy, then discovered it was for my niece and her house where everyone is down sick.

Sniff, I feel bad for them ... and a wee bit for me. But I was nice and dinna sneak any of their soup.

Just made a pot last week. I've never tried using pulled pork, but it sounds interesting. I either use a ham hock or cut up a bunch of bacon.

We did a big pot of Lentil soup with onions and jalapenos. Add some fresh herb focaccia bread.

Especially when cooked in chicken stock instead of just water.

What is the purpose for this? I'm not aware of any holiday for it. Thanksgiving in November. Then along come Christmas. Then the ever-famous black eyed peas on New Year. So, what am I missing?

I think what you're missing is that there isn't a holiday for beans and cornbread. It's great and acceptible at any time of the year.

First cool snap always calls for your favorite comfort soup/chili/stew. Be it beans and cornbread, chili, potato soup or stew, it always seems to taste better that first time of the season that the weather is a little cooler...

I'm not a cornbread fan but I have a very good chili recipe that I'm going to make before the weekend. I do like good bean soups, and I enjoy barley with some kind of meat to put in the soup, usually ham or sausage.

I've enjoyed beans and cornbread a time or two at Olde Orchard Restaurant on NW 23rd between Rockwell and Council.

Hmmmm, beans and cornbread or red beans and rice for dinner tomorrow? Tough call, but such a nice problem to have.

Beans and cornbread, chili, stew, soup. They all make the house smell like a home. Bring on the cold weather.

I've only made them once since moving to Austin 8.5 years ago, I've made chili a little more often but not much. It just doesn't "feel right" making that when it is 85 degrees outside, it seemed like my mom always made beans when it was cold outside. I think I will be making both much more in Denver this winter.

That's what you do with the leftover beans the next day....
