Thread: Devon Energy Center

  1. Default Re: Devon Energy Center (Devon Tower)

    October 19 2011

Yesterday would have been a mutual friend's 21st birthday. She died in a car accident on the 9th in Edmond. I spent quite a while at her grave in Arcadia. Telling her things that's been going on in my life since I heard she died. She was amazing enough that her life touched people like me who had never met her. I was in Bricktown later that evening and ran into another friend and other guys who she was very close with who were celebrating her birthday. I wasn't really invited, so I walked back to my car in Deep Deuce. I always bring the camera and this great shot presented itself to me.

YAY! I just looked at the tower cam and they started putting more glass in on the 46th or 47th level finally.

A few hours ago. Some are without flash and some with a nighttime enhancement app (with flash).

I've read a comment somewhere before that there will never be a tower in Oklahoma City taller than Devon because the ground here is to hard to dig a deep enough foundation for a building taller and that was part of the reason why Devon downscaled from 925' to 850'. I don't have enough knowledge on how hard the ground is after about a 18-inches cause that the furthest I've ever had to dig so could someone else enlighten me and the rest who might be wondering this?

I'm sure that's not true. If anything, there is an issue with a high water table, as when they dug for the tower they had to constantly pump out water. And besides, even solid rock -- let alone Oklahoma clay soil -- is no match for modern earth moving equipment.

The reason they scaled down the height was due to a decision to locate their data center in a separate location (near the airport) for disaster recovery purposes. They simply needed less space/floors.

And BTW, the basement/base configuration did not change when they reduced the height of the tower. They could have built up to 925' and probably beyond with the current base.

    Well that's reassuring. Thanks, Pete.

That would be a good problem to have. They could just do a little bit of blasting to make trenches for footings and not have to put in all those piers that go down a couple hundred feet. The concern is usually the foundation sinking into soft Earth.

Burj Khalifa is 2,723 feet and it is built on sand.

That is frightening. Architect2010, your thoughts on this?

You have a point but my point is being able to get deep enough, which Pete confirmed they can, not wether or not the ground is sturdy enough. However, that's why I'm not going up in the Burj Khalifa.

Did the Chinese have anything to do with Burj Khalifa? If they did, I would be nervous also. LOL
This is what happens when the ground is not sturdy enough or when you don't use enough rebar and concrete for the piers.

Okay, so the lights on Devon Tower, how are they gonna look when it's complete?

And I don't mean the LED-lights, I mean the lights inside the building.

Thunder had some pictures of Devon tower at night. Some of the lower levels had their fluorescent lights turned on, but on a normal basis most of the building lighting should turn off at night when everyone goes home.

The "ground is too hard" thing is completely misinformed. People like to use that reasoning about basements in residential housing around here, but it doesn't apply AT ALL to towers.
