Thread: Oklahoma City as a Twitter Trending Topic Area

Default Oklahoma City as a Twitter Trending Topic Area

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this but many of us use Twitter heavily. After two+ years of Twitter having the "Trending Topic" areas, Oklahoma City is still not available. It is my opinion that those at Twitter do not really think of us because we fall into the "fly-over" category. I am trying to get Twitter to add us on there and maybe those of you that use Twitter regularly could also request this feature to be added. There are smaller cities than Oklahoma City on their list like Baton Rouge and Greensboro.

Where this would help is seeing posts that are relevant to this area without having to rely on hash tags, or searches. For example, during Oklahoma City Thunder games, I often see people using hashtags similar to #OKCThunder, OKCThunder, Thunder, #Thunder, etc. Sometimes we miss some of the posts because there is no standardized hash tag being used. I have also seen this during inclement weather when people post #ok-ice and other similar tags.

I am not sure of the best method to communicate this to Twitter other than to address them directly at @twitter by following them at http://www.twitter.com/twitter. If anyone else knows a better way to communicate to them, by all means, post it. I think if enough people requested it, they would add us on their list.

    Thanks

Ha. I noticed this same thing the last week.......I have tweeted several times to Twitter about having OKC included. If enough of us make a regular habit out of it, maybe they will add us.

"If you don't see your country or city, it means we're not receiving enough Tweets from that geographical area to create a quality list. Locations are not manually selected, but rather displayed dynamically based on tweet volume."

I think some of this can be attributed to the fact that people refer to Oklahoma City in so many different ways. Since Twitter is limited to 140 characters, many people will usually default to OKC but some just say Oklahoma, or I have even seen Okie City (Not fond of that one). I wonder if their system is recognizing official full names and ignoring all other variances. Just a thought.

The reason you see a city like Baton Rouge is b/c young (college) kids use twitter more than anyone. Not sure about Greensboro. Beyond trending topics, I didn't realize that tweets were organized this way... Does this mean you can see tweets that come from that place or just ones that are about that place?

Location information actually comes from either the location specified in the user's profile or from geotagging data. Also, Twitter doesn't seem to treat "OKC" and "Oklahoma City" the same:
    OKC
    Oklahoma City

Edit: Just did some more searching comparing results, and for the most part the results are the same, just a tweet here or there that doesn't get picked up for whatever reason.

I have noticed that most people I know in Oklahoma never use their location in their posts. I always do but some people are just more security conscious than others.

I could care less if someone seen what city I'm in. Especially a city with almost 600,000 in it.
