Thread: Punishment for Restaurant Workers

  1. Exclamation Punishment for Restaurant Workers

What would you do when catching employees in a restaurant acting like a bunch of kids within the area where food are prepared? What result will you expect for the kids?

Restaurant establishments is highly different than retailers. They are the place where real food are prepared to be consumed by real people. Standards are set quite high and any actions that bring possible health hazard to the public should never be tolerated.

Being late, being a no-show, foul language, and other actions not directly involved with food processing, preparing, and delivery should be considered for coaching, verbal warning, and written report.

Playing with food, tossing food around, playing around within food area, doing private business, spitting at each other, and other health hazard actions within/around food area should be considered a No Tolerance policy for immediate employment termination.

Do you agree or disagree? Why? Openly give your thoughts. Restaurant managers, feel welcome to chime in anytime with your viewpoint.

Bring it to the manager's attention and let it be. They're just kids. They'll get a verbal warning and if they continue to be a problem they'll likely be written up and let go...but i wouldn't really worry about it. I managed a restaurant for over 10 years and saw my share of kids goofing off in the kitchen. Usually they do pretty good work when it's busy but when it's slow it's another story. Usually the ones that are a problem quit before it becomes too much of a problem anyway because they simply don't care enough about the job in the first place.

Thunder was happy yesterday that he got 3 kids fired for goofing off at work.

When, as a teenager, I worked at Kentucky FRIED Chicken (before it became the more gastro-politically correct KFC). We used to have food fights with bagged chicken livers and gizzards. The only time it ever got out of hand was when one of the pieces of offal accidentally landed in the potato salad sauce.

Some of the Assistant Managers--in their 20's--would sometimes even join in after returning from an afternoon of drinking at one of the college bars up on University Hill.

I now realize how wrong we were to involve ourselves in such hijinks--and once, many years after those events, even suffered the results of food mishandling (salmonella poisoning--from undercooked chicken)--but what are you gonna do?

That was then and this is now.

Sometimes The Wisdom Learning Curve is twisty indeed.

    Edited to Add:
Don't let any of that put you off trying the KFC Grilled Chicken. We love it. And the service at the store at 122nd and N. Penn has improved about 500%. I have, however, noticed that they no longer offer potato salad as a side option, so apparently my teenage experience was not limited to one location.

Im sure Colonel Sanders is rolling over in his grave about what this once great entity has become. It should be renamed MFC {minority fried chicken}as its obvious they try to cater to the urban or ghetto crowd.

Does that mean you don't like the Grilled Chicken? And what about the biscuits?
    (Their slaw ain't bad neither.)

I guess it's sort of like that Nameless Politician once said about John Kerry and JFK:
I knew Kentucky Fried Chicken (in fact, worked there) and this--KFC--is not Kentucky Fried.
Which, in my opinion, isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Of course, it ain't Eischen's either or even my dear departed Aunt's Mable'sLard Fried Chicken (the best.ever) nor that old Broasted Chicken place out at 23rd and Hiawassee or even Jim' Fried Chicken east of Nicoma Park. But it's tasty, reasonably priced and close.

I guess maybe I need to check the settings on my GPS (Gastronomic 'Preciation System).
(Just to make sure that I remain suburban rather than ghetto or urban.)

(And what makes you think that Harlan Sanders is in a grave within which to spin? =)

really? most chicken chains seem to market themselves to budget conscious families who are trying to get a quick and easy meal on the table. -M

The meal might be quick and easy but it hardly resembles the quality of product they had in the 80s and before. KFC,Taco bell,Pizza hut and LJS among others are all owned by the same parent company YUM foods which explains a lot i suppose.

i'll give you that, but how does lowering quality in order to minimize costs equate to marketing to minorities of the 'urban' and 'ghetto' crowd?

Its quite obvious to me watching their commercials who their target audience is.

Maybe THEY (The Massive International Food Conglomerate) a.k.a. YUM, should change their name to YUP Foods for the southerners, YO' Foods for the "urban/ghettoites" and or YSYB (Ya Sure Yew Betcha) Foods for the Greater Minneapolis/St. Paul Sprawl.

The grilled is tasty and I will have it for a change of pace, but when i want fried chicken, hard to beat the original 11 herbs & spices. I did notice that they have cut down on a lot of the sides too. The mini corn on the cobs are gone (at least from the 2 stores I go). I think those have been on the menu for several decades. And I love their biscuits. Some of the best around.

Report it to management, don't expect anything to happen to them. When you pay someone minimum wage and hire a teenager, expect a certain level of performance. If you want to be reasonably sure your dinner is prepared by more professional cook, I recommend not going to a fast food establishment. This falls under the category of 'you get what you pay for.'
