    Smile Memories

My brother asked me last week if I remember Black Hawk Park. I remember we lived on Kate street and when the pool was empty my older sister Helen and brother Charles and I were in plays. Charles and I sang and acted like teapots when we did "I am a little Teapot". I was 4 or 5 years old.

I remember and have pictures of the principal and a teacher from "McKinley School". I think it was around SW 36th and Western or Pennsylvania. I was a brownie at that time.
The next school I attended was Rancho Village Elementary School.

Does anyone have any memories of this?

    Callie,
I attended McKinley at SW 36th and McKinley (between Western and Penn) before they completed Rancho Village. I attended kindergarten through 2nd grade. The school actual ran to the 3rd grade and then the students went to the surrounding elementary schools, Lee, Heronville come to mind. Can you post the pictures? I don't remember the principal but I do remember my teachers, Kromer, Harris, and Burns.
There have been several comments about Black Hawk Park and pool. I believe it might have been in the Springlake thread.

I use to go to Blackhawk swimming pool when I was in grade school mid-50's!! It was located at the S.W. corner of what now is I-35 and N.E. 23rd.. Also went to Heronville a couple of years - had Mrs. Finch for Kindergarden and Mrs Gray for 1st grade. Went from there to Rancho Village and Mrs Kingston was the principal. Had two janitors, one was a woman named Mrs Luper and his name was Mr. Darnell!! Teachers I had were Mrs. Hare, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs.Almac & Mrs. Arnold, Mrs. Burns and Mrs. Gumm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mrs. Barker was principal while I was there. I also had Mrs Almac (two years when she went from teaching 2nd to 3rd grade), and Mrs. Burns. Mrs. Almac probably had more impact on me than any other teacher. I also wonder if I had Mrs. Harris, or Mrs. Hare. Not to sure about that. I do remember Mrs. Luper and Mr. Darnell.

Where was Black Hawk Park? I went to a lot of them but never knew
the names. I was in my 30's before I knew the name of Will Rogers
park. I think Woodson Park was the only park I could name until I
was older, i.e. in my 30's.

I used to hang with them in the late 60's and early 70's. One name I
remember is Dale, who was called Mother. Another was Captain.
There were some members of national gang that passed through in '72
and I got messed up with them.

Was "Preacher" in The Hangmen or was he in The Rogues . . .
    (It was a long time ago . . . I can't remember exactly) . . .
I do seem to recall that The Rogues used to hang out at Sinbad's . . .
(Probably among many other places . . .)

It, too, was a zoo of sorts.

Do any of the bikers on this thread remember a biker bar just west of May on what would have been 39th on the north side of the road? it was an old house that you had to walk up some brick steps to get to a room that had a fire pit in the middle of a room. I hung out there and Sinbads around 16th and May and the Scorpio on May, and the one at 23rd and Villa. Can't seem to remember the name of the one on 39th.

I met a biker named Preacher through a guy that rode a trike and worked at an overhead door place on Reno in Del City. Just a few weeks later Preacher was killed, I don't remember the circumstances of his death, but I think he rode with the Hangmen.

Blackhawk was privately owned and was not a park like all the city parks. It had a great swimming pool and also a watermelon garden. My cousin from Choctaw got thrown out one time for bringing a bar of soap into the pool to take his bath.
