This is insane. Because districts like Union & BA refuse to split their high schools, you have metro schools who have to make long trips up the Turner turnpike rather than play other 6A schools much closer.

Take Norman High's schedule...last year they traveled to Sapulpa, BA, and Jenks. This year they travel to Muskogee. To cater to the east side, here are the schools NOT on their schedule (but should be): Midwest City, Choctaw, US Grant, Mustang, Yukon, Putnam City, Putnam City North, WESTMOORE (are you kidding?!), none of the 3 Edmond schools.

Norman isn't scheduled to play another 6A school in the same county less than 10 miles away? NHS is the southern most 6A school in the metro. NHS is closer to Lawton than Tulsa. Westside schools should revolt and put an end to the waste. School districts cannot afford the fuel costs of traveling 100+ miles especially when there are other schools nearby in the same class.

Norman plays Moore, @ Moore on Sept. 8th., the Muskogee game is the farthest they travel this year, most away games are 30 minutes away or less, except for Shawnee

Who or what is forcing metro schools to accept playing teams that are this far away? Do the schools not make their own schedules? Just curious.

The OSSAA (Oklahoma Seconday Schools Activity Association) makes the schedules.

If Broken Arrow and Union were to split nothing would change. They could even split into three high schools each and the east/west split wouldn't change. The four smallest schools in 6A are Bixby, Sapulpa, Tulsa Washington and Tulsa Edison, these schools would just slide down to 5A and the split would remain as it is now.

The problem is that the Oklahoma City metro area is in the center of the state and is larger than the Tulsa Metro. So some schools from OKC are always going to have to go the east to balance the population.

A note, Broken Arrow is actually on three campuses now, they have two Intermediate High Schools (9th&10th) and one Upper High School(11th&12th) and BA was actually planning to split the Upper High School into two schools before the economy went south. Union has two campuses as well, One Intermediate High and one Upper High. Jenks has the largest single campus with over 3000 students.

It used to be that the biggest class only had 25 schools -- 3 districts of six schools each and one with seven. At that time, there were two west districts and two in the east.

In 1981 PC West won the last "big school" 4A championship over Tulsa McLain. We were almost 1,500 students in three grades at that time. When my sister started there in 1991 they had around 1,400 students in four grades. My sisters sophomore year they moved the freshman up with them, they went to the middle school format that year.

The location of the football games switch every year so for example if Norman plays Moore at Moore this year, next year Norman will play Moore at Norman. It just flip flops back and forth until schools are moved around divisions and classes every few years.
