Thread: Are you superstitious?

Several people are superstitious when watching their team play... Do you have any rituals that you partake in when watching the game?

Not really superstitious, but I keep score on a yellow legal pad - makes, misses, 3-pointers, rebounds, free throws, free throws missed, fouls, and turnovers. It helps me pinpoint what we're doing well or not so well vs the other guys. Then I put remarks out in the margin - good start, cold shooting, sloppy play, need a stop, need a hero, etc. Last nite's game is the first playoff game I didn't stay up & watch, so it's probably my fault they lost. Nothing will stop me from watching game 5...bet the house on a Thunder W.

I always knock on wood when they say, "he's perfect from the freethrow line so far tonight..."

I think the NBA is rigged to where small market, less money-making, teams can't make it to the finals.

Case in point. Watch me predict and be right about this.

Heat, Bulls (only due to popularity), Celtics, Lakers, Spurs (only small market team that has and can win in the finals in the past ten years), are the only teams that will make it to the finals this year.

Everyone tells me, "dur, but those teams could just be good you know?" Sorry. I don't believe in coincidence. For those teams to go this past decade, more than any other team, isn't about being good, it's about the NBA making it so the biggest small market team can go and win, or the popular teams can go and win, to maximize ratings and sales of merchandise.

    That's my superstition.

Of course. This is a "done deal". I am convinced that every time I watch any team I like, play a game (no matter what sport)... they loose!!!

How modest of me to think that I have such power.

They make NBA scoring sheets. You can pick them up at most major sporting goods stores.

You can get a free template here that you can printout yourself.

Over the course of a 7 game series upsets aren't nearly as likely. If you win a 7 game series, you're the better team.

How do you think its rigged? You said that small market teams can't make the finals, yet (as you said) the Spurs have. Did they not rig it the years the Spurs made it? remember they won 4 titles in 10 years...

In my post, I stated that Spurs are the only team that "coincidentally" makes it to the finals and wins, that is small market.

In the past 10 years, these four teams have gone more than any other team -

    Heat
    Lakers
    Celtics
    Spurs

I don't find that to be a coincidence.

Here's numerous reasons, on top of my theories, as to why the league is rigged -

I can find more if need be. The wiki page on Tim Donahy (sp) paints a good picture.

You may be on to something. I placed a call to my dear friend's gardener's second cousin, who knows a banker's assistant's hairdresser, who has a son who drives a car for some producer's mistress, and her opinion, shared by the sales girl at the bakery down the street from her, is that it's all based on who has pictures of which owner taken at some out of the way alley at some little known market in an all-star town in the early 80's.

Basketball is dominated by dynasties. There are only about 7 core players on any team and just 2 players can make the difference between a 60 win season and a 20 win season. As long as that small group stays together they can win consistently. It isn't like the NFL where you have 45 guys and at most the team’s best player is only on the field for 1/2 the game. In the NBA the best players are on the court for 90% of the game. If there was an NBA rule that said no player can play more than 20 minutes per game there would be a different NBA champion every year.
