Thread: Beacon of Hope?

  1. #1

    Default Beacon of Hope?

I know this was installed at Founders' Plaza at Stiles Park in 2005:

Is it routinely turned illuminated and if so, can it be seen from any distance?

I've never noticed it while in town and have never heard a mention apart from when it was first installed.

It was lit up on Opening Night the last time I went, but sheesh, thinking on it I realize that's been a few years. I don't know if they still light it up at night or not.

on edit, found a 2009 photo where it was lit (though I would have sworn it was green light the last time I eyeballed it.

also just found a September 2010 photo

Yeah, I'm down there frequently at night as I work at OU Med Center/VA Med Center. It's lit every night, but it's not as noticeable as they made it out to be when they first proposed it. You really have to be looking for it to notice it in the sky.

It's not as bright as it used to be, but it is on every evening. The structure looks to be a cut down propeller blade of a wind generator?

Like others said, it's on every night. I notice it frequently. If it's really humid or cloudy, you can see the beam of light through the air. When I see it is when I'm driving on the crosstown.

As others have said, it's on every night, seems if memory serves right, Rand had issues with the city for permitting for much brighter lights because of air traffic reasons.

It is laughable compared to the hype that preceded it. It's also quite diminutive. Remember, it was going to be an "iconic statement."

Is this the one on the east side of I-235?

I always thought it looked like a tube worm from the depths of the ocean.

This thread got me to thinking ... were (are) there plans for a second beacon to be built as well?

    You're always a critic, Metro! :-P

As for the light beam, I don't see it unless I am driving pass by it. But its not really bright. They need new light bulbs.

And for OKC to use the air traffic excuse is basically stupid. I'd say go for brighter and taller light.

Thunder, you need to quit buying palm trees and spend the money traveling to major cities to see how the real world works.

Maybe it needs a new name. The flicker of hope perhaps.

Actually there were originally plans to build 2. The other one was supposed to be on the west side of I-235, but an exact location was never chosen, other than saying it would be somewhere in the downtown area. They decided not to build 2 for various reasons, but essentially because New York City had already done 2 pillars of light after 9-11. Also, I think the plans were dropped after the first beacon of hope wasn't all that impressive. And of course there was the financial aspect as well.

My boss lives not very far from the beacon of hope and said that the beacon has detracted from his astronomy in his backyard. Before then, it was reasonably dark (even within the city) but since, has contributed as an annoyance for light pollution.

"wasn't all that impressive"....now that's an understatement. I would much rather have seen a modern sculpture than this thing. I mean seriously, any Kindegartden kid could have taken a toilet paper tube, cut it, and thrown it in the dirt. And then to put some lights in it....um....who even signed off on this lame excuse of a project anyway?

You will have to blame OKC for restricting the amount of light. I don't think anyone would have realized how weak the light was going to be after it was all done.
