Thread: Graphics card overheating

    Default Graphics card overheating

Ive had quite a lot of time on my hands lately, and recently tried SC2 again briefly. Every time I run a game it starts giving me warning beeps about the graphics card overheating. All the fans are functional. And i remember hearing that beep last summer with another graphics intensive beta. No other game does this, and no amount of any other stress tests can cause it. Any suggestions besides removing the side panel and blasting in cold air?(yes I did that and it actually worked)

Is the fan on the card actually working?
Have you blown all of the dust out of the case and off of the fans?

Do you have it overclocked? If so you might restore to stock speeds.
Might also try the latest gpu drivers not sure how this would make it overheat just a shot in the dark.

is the computer in a poorly ventilated area, like inside a desk alcove? if the case sucks in the hot air from the exhaust, you're likely to have cooling issues. -M

Its done it in two different houses now, both cool and well-ventilated.

Not trying to insult your intelligence but is the card properly seated on the mobo?

Turn down the graphics settings in game maybe?? How old is your technology? Might be time for an upgrade!

That could be a concern, actually. I'll check when I get home. I mostly do tablets and other mobile devices because of my job. The only time I turn it on is to play games or watch some site that doesn't know flash is dead. I bought it off an old roommate of mine, and he did the install of the new card.

    I know this is true.

Your choices are really a new card, or cooled air, or forced air, a heat sync, or liquid cooling. You probably don't want to do either of the last two unless you're a techie. Easiest is probably a new card. Cheapest might be cooled or forced air. Basically the difference is with forced air if you can generate enough CFM (e.g. air movement) across the card you are dissipating the heat enough to keep things cooled, whereas with cooled air it doesn't have to be blowing by fast, just cold. You can get the same effect with either. So rather than cold air another option would be for you to go online and look at CPU/GPU/chassis fans and find one with the same form factor as your case but with a tremendously high CFM rating. That might do it. The drawback is it might sound like an F-15 taking off in your computer room all the time.

It's actually pretty easy to find an aftermarket card fan. They do a lot better and run a lot quieter. Try Zalman.
