It's almost bed time and I'm hungry for a big ole chicken fried steak, gravy and potatoes. Dang!

This is one of the few things I can't find here in California, so when I visit I always have to seek it out.
Typically, I go to Chuck House and it's always darn good. Their CFS is relatively thin and not too greasy with great pepper cream gravy. The fired okra is always really good too.
I want to try other places but I'm afraid I will blow my one chance a year to get a good fix!
I've heard good things about Anne's on 39th...
For a more upscale version, I liked Cheever's the one time I tried it.
Any other suggestions?
Haven't tried it, but Irma's has one on their menu. It is actually highlighted as a Irma favorite.
Cheevers chicken fried steak is amazing.
Pete, don't waste your time on Ann's it's weird. I've had CFS from most places in the metro and by far chuck house is the way to go for the real deal and Cheevers is the best gourmet version, I particularly like their cowgirl benedict version.
in my opinion, kendall's in noble is the place for cfs. -M
Jim's Restaurant's is pretty good. I posted about them in the burger thread too. Just had their chicken fry. It's at 39th and Council in Bethany.
that was just south of berry and robinson, right? i know i'd go alot more if it were still there. -MOriginally Posted by kevinpate
I'm gonna say Cheever's.
Yes it was. Himalaya is the latest decent food to also up and move out. There's no issue of traffic access there, never has been. Only thing I can figure is the foodie's lease it, do well, owner jacks pricing and folks leave rather than have their pockets groped so deeply w/o a kiss. Pure speculation on my part as I don't know the owners, but little else makes sense for several successful food places to up and move.
Oh well, the Noble place has more charm to it anyhow. However, those folks could set up in a typical food court space and find a way to make make it overflow with goodness. They do know their stuff.
i totally agree... while more convenient, the place on berry didn't do anything for me. they moved from there back to noble to some restaurant space that looked like it used to be connected to a motel or something... that really didn't click, either. glad they're back on the main drag in noble.Originally Posted by kevinpate
sounds like i need to try cheever's. also, has anybody tried the cfs at kyle's 1025? they have both a "mike's chicken fried steak" and a "newton's ultimate chicken fry" on their menu and i'm curious as to how they measure up.

Yes, irmas is not very good, stick to their no name burger instead
Thanks. I will.
I prefer chicken fried chicken. Check for yourselves and be amazed.
Kendells.
Del Rancho.
Momma's, but she wont cook for any of you!
For my $0.02, the Chuck House chicken fry is as good as it gets. Somehow, someway, they managed to have broken the code on making a chicken fried steak that isn't greasy. I think that boils down to getting the oil to the right temperature, and then cooking it for the right length of time, which tends to limit the opportunity for the oil to soak into the meat any more than it absolutely has to. Now, I will admit its been some time since I had one there, but it was good. The last one or two I had at Del Rancho haven't been as good, but it has been a loong while.
As an aside, the last chicken fried steak dinner I had was in Branson, MO, about a year ago, at some place along the main drag up there near the Titanic musem. It was awesome....with I could remember the name of the place - Montana Mike's maybe??...oh well, I digress....
Kendall's... Noble... End of conversation.
Montana Moks is a chain. Also not just the oil temperature, but type of oil makes the taste.
If you want chicken fried steak with little breading go to Cattleman's, if you want a very minimal chicken fried steak with tons of breading, go to Del Ranco, Kendell's or Chuck house.
