Thread: Does Edmond ever use snow plows?

  1. Default Does Edmond ever use snow plows?

It's amazing to see the difference between OKC streets and Edmond streets following a major snow storm. Why can't Edmond, fairly affluent and well off to afford ample public art, take care of the basics?

It is a matter of their prioroties. And they are on public display. Pun intended.

The roads aren't completely clear, but I have seen quite a few plows out and about in Edmond.

I haven't been to Edmond, but I find it pretty interesting that there is another thread talking about how god-awful OKC has been at plowing streets.

Here's an even better question. Why doesn't Oklahoma City send its snow truck fleet employees up to Chicago to really learn how tackle a storm system? They cleared off Lake Shore Parkway less than 2 days after the storm and it had over 700 buried cars on it. I know Oklahoma City is bigger (area wise) and has less of a population, therefore less tax revenue but they obviously don't even know how to clear off streets here.

But also recall the there is currently a big investigation in NYC in reference to their abject failure to get roads cleared from a storm earlier in the winter. Friends who live in NYC are mad as hell. And there is a lot of them feeling that way. So even NYC has it stumbles. I doubt it is lack of knowledged vs lack of equipment. Training does nothing good if you do not have the trucks and plows to put on the street.

Yeah, that's why I think--as far as OKC is concerned (and I know that this is in a suburban community thread)--that when they next GOB is up for vote that they should make an exclusion for purchase of more snow trucks. It's sad that they have to hire contractors to do the rest of their business. I shouldn't say this cause I have a friend that is one of those contractors. Funny thing is, he has at least twice the number of trucks in his fleet than OKC has!

I saw 3 different snow plows yesterday in Edmond, working on the main roads.

Talk about a waste of tax dollars, all of this for a very rare snowfall event in OKC. Chicago averages 40 inches per year, OKC averages 9 inches.

What is our average over the last two seasons?...Is it a trend yet or do we need one more to start spending?

The biggest problem here is that we almost always get ice and/or sleet with snow, plows are uesless on ice.

This thread is funny... I've seen snow plows all over Edmond.

There's a rumor out there that Edmond does have plows and graders, but they roll around w/o much success. Some believe the blades turn their edges up, aghast at the thought of touching common snow that might have blown in from Guthrie, Jones or Yukon.

    probably just a rumor though.

So instead of a forum about edmond, I guess this is just and edmond bashing forum now...I would expect more from Steve...

Hipster, 2nd Street was still a mess today. I'm not into bashing Edmond. But good grief, it seems as if every time there's a major snow storm, their streets take forever to get cleared. To be fair, I ask similarly annoying questions about Oklahoma City.

I do not think Edmond's problems were any worse than OKC's - and logically - being that we are in Oklahoma - I think the state of preparedness or unpreparedness is about the same.

I don't like driving in the mess either, but I also had for them to spend too much money preparing for storms that don't happen too!

Can you imagine the uproar if two summers ago, the OKC Mayor and Council had announced "were going to spend 5 million dollars on snow removal equipment". The same ones complaing about roads not being cleared in a timely manner would have been complaining about a waste of tax dollars and wanting to circulate a recall petition.

You can't win for losing, and no matter how hard you try, you can't please everyone.

No uproar from me...Hope they do spend some bucks being better prepared...Looking at another 6 to 12 on Wed which will paralyze the metro again until Friday

Wonder how much the cities lose each day 90% of their citizens are stuck in their homes?

Actually, they gain. Several store and resturaunt owner's claim they save money when forced to close (wages, utilities, etc) and when weather improves, shoppers come out in groves and spend-spend-spend. One store owner claims he was closed for three days, on the first day he was open, he profited more then in any normal 5 day period. More spending means more tax dollars.

I live out in the boonies (north of Arcadia in Edmond city limits) and we had a snow plow hit Coffee Creek and Westminister the morning after the big snowfall. I thought they did a good job.

The snow removal in Edmond was absolutely ridiculous. There is no reason it should take 4 days (plus melting snow) to clear the roads. I was in town this week for work and the roads were terrible.

That's what low taxes get you. Zero snow removal. And residential streets? Yeah right. Deathtraps.

uuh I don't think OKC does residential streets either... When I was on Edmond roads on Thursday and Friday they were no worse than downtown OKC.

Your are correct, OKC does not, never has and never will, do residential streets, it would be impossible to do every street and how would they decide what neighborhood to do first.
