Default New-ish Coffee Shop, my personal favorite...

    These guys...

    https://www.facebook.com/VintageCoffeeOK

...had a rough time getting the new location opened.

They were originally located in Edmond and were known for making exceptional coffee. Their Edmond location did great morning business, but completely died off before lunch. They had an opportunity to move to an awesome location - the basement of the old church on 49th and Western in OKC. The move was mostly painless and they got everything set up in no time.

The health inspectors came through and liked what they saw, but when the department of city planning came through, Vintage received a devastating list of demands. Because of the 'change of building use', they were required to install fire sprinklers, add parking, create a common area so the upstairs tenants wouldn't have to emergency exit through their rented space, and more. Over time they found themselves with even more requirements, like a pricey bike rack. I'm sure all the Captain Hindsights out there can offer opinions on this sort of thing, but they never expected to be faced with bills in the 10s of thousands when every appliance they used was new and electric only (no cooking equipment).

Completing the work has been expensive and time consuming... but thanks to ingenuity, elbow grease, and crowd sourced funding (the preselling of items and services), they are finally going to be open and running in full compliance with the municipality starting Tomorrow At 6:00am!!

I know the owner of this place. We worked together at an ad agency for almost 5 years, and he's a hell of a guy with a wonderful family. The coffee is superb and local. Go by and try it for yourself.

The owners are friends of mine, too. It's been tough watching them deal with the delays and demands, but it is wonderful to finally see their hard work come to fruition.

I was one of their Edmond patrons and was sad to see them move. Very glad they are ready to open - I'll drive out of my way to get a cup of their coffee. Very nice people and I hope they succeed.

As someone who has been responsible for obtaining licenses for new restaurants before, I can tell you that it can be a big headache getting all of that done. A lot of restaurants and shops run into similar troubles not knowing what they're getting into. I'm sure they probably didn't even realize that these sorts of delays and expenses were even possible, but that's why it's important for owners to consult either an attorney or the different agencies beforehand to do some due diligence. We've run into similar delays before when it comes to zoning a location that has never been zoned for alcohol before. Expensive, arduous process.

For my sake, I'm excited to see a new coffee joint open up right by my house. Can't wait to try it.

This happened to a great bar in OKC. I can't remember the name, but they had their licenses and everything... I went there one night and they were closed. Asked around and heard they were shut down because of zoning issues. Only bar in town with a horror movie night.

I work in Edmond, and it's easy to get off and back onto 44 when heading into the office. Even though there's a Starbucks around the corner from me, I'll put in the extra miles for a superior cup of local.

I would like to point out that it was not the "department of city planning." Building codes are enforced by the Development Services Department.
