These are right. We do have very old buildings all around. But Devon is in a risky location with constant threat of tornadoes. We can only wait to see how well the tower will fare.

Something tells me that those buildings I have mentioned (and many more that we could mention) have seen their fair share of 'weather' anomalies, war, earthquakes and pestilence... obviously there are limits to what any building could endure .

The only skyscraper ever hit by an F5 tornado is still standing and in use.

By definition a skyscraper is at least 500 ft tall!So by definition OKC only has 1 skyscraper until The new Devon tower reaches 500 ft,then OKC will have two!on the other hand Tulsa has 4 towers over 500 ft!

Perhaps it wasn't answered because nobody knows the answer. I could speculate that it could be so that the cranes could lift the glass to be installed on that section though.

Perhaps a tornado has already started chipping away at the building, you know, to wear it down over the next 150-200 years.

Looking at the OKC Sky Line cam you can see the flash of at least two welders. One is welding the stairs in the podium building the other the black objects west of the tower.

There is absolutely no official defintion of how tall a skyscraper must be other than a very tall building with many floors. Check the dictionary.

and where dmoor did you see this definition?

I always saw a highrise was a building over 12 floors or 100 feet that rises into a skyline and a skyscraper anything over 262 feet that changes a skyline and a supertall skyscraper anything over 300 metres/986 feet.

Based on this, I would say OKC has a number of skyscrapers, much more than just Chase. [Devon, Chase, FNC, City Place, OK Tower, SandRidge, Leadership, BOK, and possibly Mid America should all be considered downtown skyscrapers. I'd call Valliance, Founders, Union, and Classen suburban skyscrapers].

I noticed that today while crossing the city. The welding I saw yesterday looked like it was on two black spans across the dirt area. I remember thinking it looked like the exact width of the crawler crane.

No matter how many renderings, seeing real photos of that huge structure rising is still amazing.

It's really hard to comprehend how much this building with change downtown and the skyline, especially for those of us that are a bit older and haven't seen a significant change in 30 years.

Is there a certain wind speed that they declare to dangerous and stop elevated work? What about the tower cranes? Seem to me a day like today would be very dangerous.

Well, Oklahoma Tower and Leadership Square were early-mid 1980's buildings and they did change the skyline - but I hear ya, no changes in 25 years, until now.

I don't understand why people dismiss Renaissance Hotel, it is like 14 stories plus the glass top. That's nothing to write off, and if you notice, it does stand out in the skyline from most angles, much better than the parking lot that was there before.

Oklahoma Tower was finished in 1982 and Corporate Tower in 1980. Mid-America Tower (Devon's current home) was complete in 1981; Leadership Square in '84.

And the hotel was a nice addition but hardly changed our skyline.
