Of course, nothing ever came of it, she was way out of my class! I can't tell who the male mascot is.

The 1972 yearbook does not show or speak of the mascots. This is about the time period that OU dropped their n-d-n

The Indian for OU was Little Red. Funny thing, he wasn't made
to do it. He liked doing it. It was totally respectable and not
degrading in any way, shape or form.

Yeah, he probably had something a lot of people don't want to have anymore:....PRIDE in their Heritage and their State....Oklahoma::::"Home of the Red Man"....ya ta hey....

Little Red was a constant when I was in school at OU and he was very much loved. No one ever considered it to be degrading or a desrepectful caricature of Indians.

I'm quarter Choctaw from my father's side. My wife was quarter Choctaw on her mother's side. So I got a roll number from the Choctaw nation and they helped pay for my daughter's college eduation. In fact my oldest daughter will start nursing school next August, while my youngest will graduate from OCU in December. I appreciate the Choctaw nation helping.
We only could get the roll number from my wife's side of the family. I remember asking my mother why we didn't have a roll number. She always told me that my father's family was to proud to accept hand outs from the government. I was left out from getting any assistance. So I don't think it not only now that anyone don't want pride in their heritage, but it went on before now. I think it's the "Politically Correct" thing.

I'm 64 years old and it wasn't until a few months ago that I found out how much Chickasaw i really was. I do (like your family) remember people were not willing to admit any Native American blood in their family. I can remember the first week in Grade school (every year) the teachers would ask if anyone was part or full blooded Indian....I used to think that would be so cool to be part Indian.....there was a family across the street that were full blood Creek. I always watch to see if they would be doing War Dances and or put on war paint. Their boys could whip anyone, anywhere though....

My Grandfather felt the same way, so we are not on the Cherokee roles

You would know.....never could figure out why you wouldn't help ....(Me that is.) and, I think they (the sister's) are still that tough...one of them works for the blood bank and she tries to be easy when taking blood but, I think she remembers some of the tings from her childhood....

Not on the roll because they did not want to be charity cases. Akin to welfare today. Some tribes will no longer enroll you no matter blood quantum.

The problem that Townhero will encounter is there are many who do not understand or even care these items, land, health care, school funds......are protected by treaties not handouts. Not for free.

The Cherokee are one of the tribes that will not accept new members. I hope you are proud and share your heritage.

Went to the CHHS-Altus football game. Homecoming. I left at the half since it was 55-0. Big CHHS turnout.

Time for my yearly rant. Who lost in football last week, 213-13? Give up? Try the southside schools of OKC, Grant, S.E. and CHHS. The biggest joke of all is U.S.G. is classified as a 6-A school. Friday night they lost 86-0 to Lawton. Last year got so bad when they played Tulsa Union they not only played with a running clock they actually stopped keeping score. I take my hat off to first year coach, Matt Miller for having a meaningful monday practice every week. These young men should get an allstate jacket just because of heart and desire, and Miller should be coach of the year just for keeping eleven players on the team each week! Just my two cents, but what a tough gig.

At the CHHS game last Friday was an official with one arm. Although I commend the usage of such a person I must say it was not right to place this person in the situation of signaling any scoring. Touchdown, field goal, extra point, one arm lifted to show it was good.

Checking out the Beacon, 11/25/2010, CHHS has a rowing team which competes on the Oklahoma River. Other teams represent N.W. Classen, U.S. Grant, Putnam City, and Santa Fe South.

I am so glad that this item did not receive any "racial" postings. Such as, guess they discovered it was easier to row then to swim the river. Proud of you people.

Just wanted to pass this on. From Shelly Jarvis, English Teacher and Senior Sponsor.

"Hey! CHHS Student Council is having a toy drive for the City Rescue Mission. Maybe some of you guys at the meeting would like to bring a toy for a child? Or maybe you would like to call the Beacon and tip them off... they can come out and report the good stuff. We're delivering toys on Monday."

It's a good cause , so you don't have to be a CHHS Alum to give. If you want to bring the toy to Coit's this Saturday, I will pass it on......

My parents met at Capital Hilll High School in 1937. She was in the 9th grade and he was in the 10th. They got married a week after she graduated, June 1941. I think she still goes to the reunions. I'll tell her about this website, maybe she'll put something on it. She'll be 88 this week.

Hello. I'm trying to locate a biological grandparent that I believe may have attended chhs in 1936. Does anyone know how or where I can find a 1936 yearbook? I appreciate any help!
