Thread: Devon Energy Center

Paying to have a 925-ft building designed and finding a way to get it built denotes a certain amount of ambition. Now, some would think it perfectly natural that deciding to downsize it 75-ft is a wise business and image choice--others might postulate that 925-ft is a prelude (and option) to add 78-ft more at least, surpassing Dallas (921-ft) and Houston (1002-ft) and making a **huge** statement about your company. Maybe Devon is just an exploration concern, not interested in fame and prestige. But--then again--maybe not. And, by the way, adding a few hundred million dollars worth of free added advertising and immense recognition in a time when other cities are not building much. Reminds me how people in the East laughed at the Oklahoma Land Run in 1889 and how little there was to be had there. The question is simple--how wide is the vision of the people who chose this marvelous, triangular and spectacular structure we see taking form before us today. And--perhaps--they might be the first really big player in the CNG-based consumer automotive fuel industry to replace liquid gasoline...and they have almost all the chips they need now to put a lot on "00" on the roulette wheel of American Industry. And--it will deal a death-blow to dependence on foreign oil--for which they would receive incalculable praise and prestige. Or--maybe they just need to save a few bucks and move the computer room elsewhere. My instincts tell me different.

In the I.T. industry at the moment, risk management and disaster recovery are hot issues. Moving the computer room elsewhere makes perfect sense and I doubt they have time for games. Building this headquarters is practically a drop in the bucket to Devon's cash flow (their cash flow is huge), and they could build it as high or big as they wanted at any time - if they have shortened the building by a few floors, it's not about money.

The south core form has jumped and you can no longer see the Crystal Bridge building. The concrete boom is starting to get really close to tower crane 1 so I guess that means the cranes will have to be jumped within the next week or two. Anyone see any signs of them mounting the cranes to the building?

I am looking forward to a couple of construction cam milestones. 1. The Tower crane jumps as mentioned above. 2. the building breaking and obstructing our view of I-40, should happen within a couple of weeks. 3. The Tower interrupting the line of the horizon, and the floor being inline with the height of the camera. That will provide some great shots through the building! It will be fun to see the sky through the building.

Would love some updated pics if anyone is so inclined!

Does anyone know if the final structural specifications could actually support the originally proposed 925 feet or even 1000 feet? I assume that, in the name of efficiency, there is little room for maneuver with load bearing parameters. Any structural engineers on the blog who could comment?

It looks like they started an alternating pattern of placing rebar. Every other core wall has rebar that is two floors high. On the next floor the other core walls will have rebar that is two floors high.

I know this is added expense, but is it just me, or would it be nice to have 2 cams eventually? 1 that stays pointed where this one is and one that follows the tower up. Soon the cam will have to be pointed up to follow progress, but there will be tons of stuff still going on at the base...just a thought.

hipster, it's not the expense... We'd need another location, where someone could mount and point a camera (which I would provide) and have it continually connected to an operating and internet-connected computer.

If someone has a good spot, let me know and I'll buy a camera and lead them through the set-up.

Could we not have 2 camera's in the same spot, just point 1 up? I guess it would be limited in how high the window frame goes, but I would think that would work for a little while.

I think the guy having the cam in his office will probably do that.

I had to read your question a few times to realize that it was the same question I had. Therefore, I can't give you an answer but it sure does cast a nice shadow...

It is likely that this floor is taking them longer due to the fact that it is a new set of forms that they are having build and adjust to be right for the rest of the building. It is not that common that this thread goes silent enough for it to fall of the current thread list for daily activity, so thought I would post thoughts.

I am eager to start see the electrical progress in the form of service lighting on the lower floors. This will allow a greater deal of subcontracting work to take place round the clock. (and provide more exciting night time photo ops.

It will also be great to see the completion of the basement overhead slab. Wondering what the arrival date for the first glazing to arrive on the site for the tower.

Also... it seems like they are taking time to remove the scaffolding and forms from te lower floors now that the concrete has set enough.

Cool Re: Devon Tower: Officially Under Construction

    Thanks, Thunder.
I can't normally see it from I-40 like that...it's like texting while driving...I would imagine.

I hope you weren't driving. LOL

Edit: I see the driver side mirror.

I held it up while both of my eyes was looking straight forward. I could see off the corner of my eye where the tower is as I adjust the phone. This was done during rush-hour-traffic. I'll do another one when the height doubles.
