Bike to Work Day 2010

Just a reminder that Bike to Work Day 2010 is this Friday, May 21st. The event is aimed at sparking interest in bicycle mobility as a healthy and efficient transportation mode for Central Oklahoma. This year we have 7 community participants:

Guthrie

Hopefully the people biking to work en masse won't obstruct traffic for vehicles. I see that often in midtown, where someone will ride a bicycle on a street where the speed limit is 40mph, yet they only get up to only ~20mph.

That's why we need bike lanes. Then it wouldn't be an issue nearly as often.

Bicycles have the same rights as other vehicles on the roadway. They also pretty much have to obey the same laws.

Exactly, that's why I get so upset when I see a bicycle rider going the wrong direction on my side of the street like the rules don't apply to them.

It's not a question of rights and laws, it's a question of being inconsiderate. I don't get in my car and drive 20 in a 45 (which is about as fast as I want to go on my bike) during rush hour. That's just rude.

That'd be like getting on I-35 and driving 35MPH.

I ride 10-15 miles per day (or at least I try to). It's pretty easy for me as my neighborhood connects right up with the Lake Hefner bike trail. In the past, when I wanted to ride and didn't live close to anything, I stuck to back roads or I drove out to one of the parking lots next to the trails.

Riding down a major street at peak time may be legal, but it's dangerous for both the cars and the bike riders. If you ride a bike and plan to do this, make sure you have a good helmet and good insurance.

And that's really the point of events like these. Not to necessarily inform the public that bicycles are allowed to be there, but to promote the need for truly separated bicycled facilities, get public officials involved, and start the process of establishing on-street bicycle committees tasked with developing and implementing bike master plans.

Please, elaborate. I have no problem with people riding their bike. However, many people on bicycles are rude. Many don't care if they are traveling 20mph in a 40mph zone, making everyone else's commute to work longer.

Bicycling threads - regardless of subject or forum - always end up in the same place - an argument on who owns the road. So I'll cut to the chase and save everybody a little time:

1. Cars and bicycles are both legally entitled to operate on the roads, with the possible exception of freeways and toll roads, and are both subject to the same laws, but with a few exceptions. Bicycles must stay as far right as is safe, and that's determined by the cyclist. Bicyclists do not have to ride at a minimum speed. Bicylists and motorists can both be cited for speeding, running stop signs, failure to yield, etc.
2. Some bicyclists are inconsiderate and some are ignorant of traffic laws, but some are considerate and knowledgeable. The same goes for motorists. 'Nuff said.
3. "I was (riding my bike/driving my car) minding my own business when this jerk (in a car/on a bike) (cut me off/blew through a stop sign in front of me). I got (off of my bike/out of my car) and gave him a piece of my mind. I was in the right and he broke the law. Those darn (motorists/bicyclists) sure are jerks."
4. We should have more dedicated bike lanes, but it will take money we don't have right now, so in the meantime, share the road.
