Thread: Kobe ate at waffle house tonight

His sour attitude probably was the result of yahoos pestering him in public. Seriously, it is one thing for kids to ask for an autograph at a game. It is another thing for adults to approach him when he is trying to eat.

OKC is new to the top level pro athlete situation. When you live in Dallas or Denver you see the pro athletes out and about pretty often. You get to know which ones seek out the recognition and which ones just want to be left alone just by their body language. When you are tempted to approach an athlete while he is eating, my experience is that you are asking for it. When Troy Aikman was still playing I saw people all over him like flies on u-know-what when he was out for a nice meal. I really felt sorry that he couldn't get a moment's rest. I saw John Elway at his own restaurant chew out someone for approaching him while he was eating with his family. Even Jimmy Johnson and another assistant coach for the Cowboys couldn't have a moment's relaxation having a beer without people coming up to them every 3 seconds - even for kids autographs - and for someone like Kobe ESPECIALLY for kids autographs. Athletes know people get their autographs and then go sell them on E-bay. They are regular people just like us and need some peace and quiet sometimes so unless it's an emergency, give them a smile and leave them alone.

All in all, hangin' at a WH ain't so bad. Never been to a bad one actually, though some have been better than the others.
I'm not knocking the Waffle House. I have eaten at more than my share and my kids love it. They really like to sit at the counter and watch the cook work. But I still don't know if anyone has ever said they need to eat there more often.

Here in the ATL (home of Waffle House) there is one at nearly every major intersection. I drive 3 miles to work and I pass three of them.

I'll put this debate to an end once and for all. Six Jaguars, some NBA retirees, and one local weatherman live my subdivision. I'll ask them if they are bothered by people asking for autographs while they are out eating.

That would be interesting to know. You really have to adjust your final answer based on whether they are average players or of the superstar/extremely recognizable catagory like Kobe, though.

These guys aren't superstars, but they know the superstars. There is no doubt people know who they are though - they are big guys and Jacksonville is a small bowl.

Just like OKC. I understand the notion that pro athletes are entertainers and should expect some of this type of thing, but I've also personally seen them hounded to death by people who just can't leave them alone. For those who are trying to lay low and enjoy a meal or a beer, I feel badly for them. For the Dion Sanders (the former "neon" version) and Michael Irvin, they sought out attention because of their clothing and behavior. Others dont.

In 1996 there were 56 Waffle House locations, we joked that you could tell which side of Atlanta you were on based on whether there was a Waffle House or Starbucks on the corner. Between the hotel where we stayed to the Coke plant I think there were 5 of them.
