Thread: Edmond/UCO need each other to change image.

Cool Edmond/UCO need each other to change image.

Dont edmond my norman, we've all heard the line and for me a student at uco, and to all residents of edmond it should be a hurtful tag. Lets be honest its basically saying edmond is a stuck up, underwear to tight, conservative town. And for the 16,000 students who attend uco or 4,000 students who attend oc, good luck looking for the college atmosphere that so many enjoy in norman or stillwater. The edmond city council and uco big dogs need to sit at the table and have a real talk here. UCO is a good school and i love it but sometimes you wonder why people say, kids go to uco who couldnt go to ou or osu. I hate that comment but i understand where it comes from because at times on campus all you see kids wearing is ou or osu gear, hell i even see texas longhorn gear. Its almost like the students here are sometimes have paper bags over their heads, in shame. i know theres a lack of pride in the school, and thats where edmond can help. UCO big wigs need to tell edmond to let them have some type of campus corner, put flags of uco on the traffic poles, zone for more student housing, sell more uco gear in the stores. Edmond could tell their cops to loosen up their jock straps and quit pulling kids over just cause, also have more tolerance for students who dont look like the all american kid, build more things geared towards the big college population. Just a few ideas from me, but maybe its just a dream. Maybe uco will always be looked at as the "commuter school", and maybe edmond will always be looked at as boring and conservative

If you think UCO has an image problem now, you should have seen it 10-15 years ago. Its come a long way.

I dont think there is much uco or edmond could ever do to create an atmosphere similiar to norman or stillwater. I remember going on a campus tour with my high school to uco and the counselor giving us a tour was wearing a ou hoody. Now word is uco will be soon turning into a division 1 school so that may help a little with students having some sort of pride, other than that its just hoop dreams.

I know little about UCO other than Finch and Webb went there from NSU, the jazz lab is there, and UCO used to host an annual AABOOTRRR event many moons ago.

The same thing happens at all except the flagship schools, in this area you can go down to Texas State-San Marcos or UT-San Antonio and find Whorn or Aggie gear all over the place, the same thing at the smaller private schools like St. Edwards. You see a lot of UT gear at UTEP which is a D1 school.

No doubt an upgrade in athletic status for UCO might help some, down here Texas State is DI-AA and planning on moving up to DI-A and UTSA is starting a football program with their first season in 2011 (DI-AA) with the goal of DI-A in 2015, those are schools of 30,816 (Fall 2009) for Texas State and 30,000 for UTSA and I know that UCO isn't that far behind in enrollment anymore.

Too many people grew up in OU/OSU families, my sister and I did. Both of us went to OU and UCO, my sister was a Regent's Scholarship person and transferred to UCO from OU after she changed majors and is going to grad school there right now. Reputations are a hard thing to change, I agree that Edmond needs some sort of UCO oriented development between the campus and downtown, something like Campus Corner in Norman, The Strip in Stillwater or The Drag/West Campus here in Austin. At least UCO isn't all spread out to other campuses like UTSA which has the main campus on 1604, the downtown campus and one out near HemisFair Park, having everything pretty much together makes it much easier to create a campus community.

BTW, OC only has just over 2,000 enrollment I believe, and is in OKC City limits.

I would like to see more from UCO. I graduated from there when it was Central State University. I started when it was Central State College. The parking lots were gravel. I moved back in 1990, so much has changed in the 20 years I've lived here. I remember, we wanted to move to Edmond when I was in school and we couldn't find any where to live. There has been a lot of changes over time. I have daughter at UCO right now. She loves it there. She'll be going to nursing school next year. I would love to see UCO advance and become a school like OSU/OU or even Tulsa. Maybe one day.

Oh, BTW if I may add, it's been a commuter college since I went there, some almost 40 years ago. It has provided college educations for those that couldn't go to OU or OSU for what ever reason. I remember going to class with veterans from Viet Nam. But it would be nice if the downtown and local area could develop more in association with UCO.

It might techically be in OKC, but it's an "Edmond" university.

You 100% sure on that? I always thought Memorial Rd. marked the northern border of OKC with regard to that part of Edmond. OC is on the northern side of Memorial there, so wouldn't it be in Edmond? OC's website says it's in OKC, "bordering" Edmond, but where then is this border?

Somewhat true - this may belong in another thread but I think it is kind of funny that it looks like OKC city limits are they way they are just to include OC and OKC doesn't really seem to recognize it as a university in Oklahoma City.

No, there is a notch cut out in Edmond there - here is a map showing the line at Smiling Hills - the map is from the City of Edmond's website:

Interesting. I guess Edmond really wouldn't want another large institution to have to provide with municipal services, getting very little ROI.

Not sure about any others, but UCO really steps it up when it comes to hanging Christmas lights on campus!

The E-W quarter section line between Memorial & 150th/33rd is the predominant location, I think there may be a few jogs in it but I don't think it ever gets all the way to Memorial except in a few, small locations. The gray line in that map is the city limits line I believe.

It really doesn't matter where its at. The point is its so dead here, I played football in kansas before transfering, Uco has about 10000 more students than my previous, but they would be blown out of the water with support. Our stands were packed every saturday, uco can barely put 2000 in the seats... I dont know what it would take, its just like thousands of strangers scared to say anything up here... pretty lame

My brothers and I grew up in Edmond, looked like "all American" kids and I can't count the number of times WE got pulled over for pointless crap? It has nothing to do with intolerance, and everything to do with boredom.

Edmond cops are bored, plain and simple, and go after kids in general. That's the price of a low crime town.

As for the rest if your post, I agree whole-heartedly.
    Continue the Renaissance!!!

This issue is at the top of the agenda for the new student government.

Hopefully they can get the ball rolling.
