Thread: Funeral Song Selection

    Default Funeral Song Selection

    Years ago my silly brother in law said he wanted to be cremated. He said during his cremation he wanted the song "Come On Baby Light My Fire"..lol.

    Got me to thinking...what song(s) would you want at your funeral?

    Hah. Funny question. I will have to think about it about although I don't plan on having a funeral.

    Reminds me of my grandfather who was a wonderful, godly man but not a church goer. I don't recall every haven't a discussion with him about god or religion but he was the kind of man that didn't have to talk because you could see how he treated people and lived his life.

    When he was dying, we had hospice help so he could stay home. As he got weaker and weaker, he lost his voice in the last few weeks but for awhile, he would write down what he wanted. In the weeks before his death, he asked for old hymns that he'd heard in church as a boy and would have us turn them up very loud (he was losing his hearing due to the illness). As a granddaughter, it was quite a journey to see how he returned to the faith of his boyhood as he came closer to death. Because he couldn't really speak, we still didn't discuss it. But it was lovely to sit in the dark, holding his hand and listen to the songs that gave him some sort of peace. I would never have even known that was going on inside him.

    I have thought about this for years. It would be kind of Beatle heavy:

    Flying - The Beatles
    The Attics of My Life - Grateful Dead
    In My Life - The Beatles
    Across the Universe - The Beatles
    Little Martha - Allman Brothers

    The first and last are both instrumentals, very emotional ones, to me. The lyrics of the middle three accurately summarize what I would like to say to those I leave behind. Plus they are all upbeat, if not in tempo, then certainly in sentiment.

    White Rabbit-Jefferson Airplane
    Somebody To Love-J.A.
    Today-J.A.

    My wife, who is not the least bit Goth, has said she wants "Last Dance" by the Cure followed by "Until the Last Moment" by Yanni - - that's a combination!

    No preference as to words, or music, if any at all.
    Such decisions belong to those who will receive the benefit of their choices.

    Such songs belong to the wishes of the deceased for whom you honor at the funeral.

    "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" by Oasis may be a good one. I love that song. That and a good ole a cappella version of Amazing Grace. Haven't ever given it much thought though...

    I had a fried who had the OSU alma mater complete with the words on a screen at the front of the church. We were all required to stand and sing together. All of the flowers were orange themed. It was great. They closing song was spirit in the sky. I really miss her. I hope my funeral is as memorable.

    Lone bagpipe playing Amazing Grace. Battle Hymn of the Republic would also be nice.

    Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
    He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
    He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
    His truth is marching on.
    (Chorus)
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    His truth is marching on.
    I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
    They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
    I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
    His day is marching on.
    (Chorus)
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    His day is marching on.
    I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
    "As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
    Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
    Since God is marching on."
    (Chorus)
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Since God is marching on.
    He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
    He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
    Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
    Our God is marching on.
    (Chorus)
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Our God is marching on.
    In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
    With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
    As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
    While God is marching on.
    (Chorus)
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    While God is marching on.
    He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
    He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave,
    So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,
    Our God is marching on.
    (Chorus)
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Our God is marching on.

    The Battle Hymn of the Republic is fantastic. Some might not like the sentiment but the lyrics and the melody are beyond compare. IMO.
