    I think you are correct....

Man! You really know your underage drinking lounges.

Ever go to the Free Spirit?

That place was an adventure unto itself...............

There was also a bar on N.W. 23 and Penn. Sat on the east side of Penn and around the corner of 23rd. I mean right around the corner. Lot's of youngsters there and as far as I know the police never came in. I had altered my draft card. Worked as far as getting into places but I'm not sure if the PD would have bought it.
The Sooner Broadcast was in Norman.

The name of the place was too touchy feely sounding. I never was one for
    touchy feely.

I did visit the Drunk Tank on N.W. 10th.

Man, Prune, the Drunk Tank was a great place to end up at the end of the night, eh? Their service really sucked though.

During the 1970's there was a Sooner Broadcast System on Council. Four or five of us would go there regularly. In the same bldg to the north was a liquor bar. If I got tired of beer I would go next door.

One night after leaving SBS our car was stopped by Bethany PD. I was not driving but was wasted. 2 cops got us out of the car and spread on the hood of the squad car. Don't know what I said or did but one of the coppers slammed the handle of his nightstick into my side breaking three ribs. They took the driver in for a breathalyzer, but would not let the rest of us stay with car telling us not to be there if a tow truck came or the coppers returned. No cash. 0200 hrs. Walked from there to the south side. It was November and cold. Ribs did not help. The driver passed his test, took him back to his car and sent him on.

That is one of several memories from the Sooner Broadcast System on Council. First wife can vouch for the name and location as well.

    My ribs have never healed.

The last time I was by the place it was some video game joint. Cactus Jack's?

The Free Spirit would let anyone in as long as you purchased a "membership"! I think it was $5.00 bucks. In the 70's we had "liquor by the wink" and displaying the membership card allowed you to purchase a mixed cocktail without BYOB. Also, displaying the membership card guaranteed no ID check. The Free Spirit was located on Classen, had a wonderful sound system/dance floor and was frequented by many gay folks, straight folks who were not bothered by the aforementioned and of course, all the underage folks!

Since at 18 you could legally go to beer bars and they closed at midnight, we found a place to get in with altered draft cards. The Free Spirit. Mixed drinks and closed at 2:00. Never had any problems with the gay patrons.

It's still open, it's just N. of 59th, however, it's under new ownership, not quite the same.

Fred Gangs Meat Market. I think it was on 39th. Went there for the all you can eat king crab legs. A buddy and I would make a mountain of shell in the middle of the table and embarass the future wives with our eating prowess. Good times. Now I'd gain 20 lbs. just talking about it.

I wonder why it would close down? I thought it was one of the family owned Del Rancho's
