Default Military Veterans - Sound Off!

I'd like to get an idea of how many of you served in the military past or currently. Active duty or reserve or a combination. Cite some units if you want, it's a small world, and you might just reconnect with an old buddy.

Two West Pacs! I'm jealous! That's awesome. Did you get to Perth?

Was First Sgt. Ramerez (Maybe Sgt. Major or retired by then) back with 1/9 when you were there? He was our Series Chief at PI in '82. Something of a legend with the Walking Dead we were told.

Perth!!! Yes I did. Highly Recommend that visit.

No Ramirez. We had a 1st Sgt Ross. A legend in "Force Recon" for almost 15 years before coming to our unit to retire. He retired and went on to LAPD. Who know how far he's moved up since 1994. He took training to a whole different level for the two years he was there before retirement.

Surely there are more than have sounded off so far.

Oh, and I had a slight brain fart earlier....I meant First Sgt. Hernandez instead of Ramerez, lol! He was probaly retired by then too. Got my little red graduation book out and double checked...talk about memories.

First, maybe not everyone wants to wear it on their sleeve - my apologies if that sounds harsh but its hard to express intent in type. Not meaning to sound that way. Compare it to religion. Many people are religious but don't go around telling everyone about it.

Second, when I was in my late teens and early 20's just after Vietnam, being in the military wasn't considered the great honor and didn't get the respect it has now (and SHOULD HAVE) so virtually none of us enlisted then.

Third, it would scare the **** out of me if my son wanted to enlist, but it would warm my heart and it would be a very proud moment if he would want to (though he is waaay too young).

Ran through those same emotions when daughter's hubby decided to enlist in the USAF.

His first enlistment is nearly up, but not his service. He is soon to enter retraining for a new field during his next enlistment. Solid young man.

They'll all be back this side of the pond next year around mid-spring, making Poppa and Nana very very happy.

It's a brotherhood one can only understand by having lived it. I'm looking for fellow service members here, not a debate. Please respect that.

I understand that and I respect that. One of the posters was starting to go down the road of "if you weren't in the military then you don't deserve an opinion on military issues" tone. Again, its hard to discern in type.

I am grateful for the sacrifices of our military and their families. I had a brother in Vietnam and it is hard to worry when they are in harm's way. I live near Quantico and Fort Belvoir so lots of military and former military in the neighborhood and around. Wonderful people and I just respect the hell out of them, including their families. I've said it, before - they are the best of us.

Oh, and even though many of you OKCTalkers know, or have figured it out from my avatar - my daughter is a Sergeant in U.S. Army right now.

She served a year in Afghanistan, MP duty as escort to 101st Airborne. She is one of only 3-4 females allowed to wear the Airborne patch and has a Combat Infantry Badge for the firefights where she engaged.

I am very proud of her, but the year she spent in the sandbox was the most terrifying year of my life. Everytime the phone rang at odd times, my heart stopped. Once when we were talking on the phone, she said "gotta' go, mom - we're taking mortar fire".

I'm so glad we respect our soldiers, marines and airmen now - we treated our returning Vietnam troops so poorly. thank you to all who have served and who still are!
