Thread: Pody Poe

  1. #1

    Default Pody Poe

I read Pody Poe's autobiography he wrote a couple of years before he died. He was an interesting character to say the least. I thought it was strange when he died there was no obituary in the Oklahoman but there was a short article mentioning his death. Does anyone know how he died? I know he was around 74 years old and had diabetes according to what he put in his book. I am sure he had dirt on a lot of people. That is probably why he was able to run a nationally known casino at his house in the Nicholls Hills area for 18 years. Did any of you know him? Any good stories? I am sure the statute of limitations is probably up.

Bigray, I am unfamiliar with Pody Poe. Can you give us a brief idea of who he was? I'll google - maybe something will turn up.

I did not know him real well, but I can tell you the man was afraid of virtually nothing. Law-enforcement, IRS............

Just in casr you choose not to trust an unreliable source such as Wikipedia.

Pody Poe was a very well known local celebrity. Not due to business or entertainment (so to speak), but because of illegal activity (which most is now legal except the way he did it). He ran illegal casinos which had many very well known local and probably national people as participants. He was arrested frequently. I think he did several stretches in the joint as a result.

I worked for a while with a young lady who later went to work for Pody. She was a petite blonde bombshell who was smart as a fox. Last time I saw her was when she was eating lunch on a court recess during one of Pody's (and her) several trials. Her name was Jana.

I never knew Fat Eddie's full name and I am not sure Eddie was his real name. He was one of the top gamblers in the state (and elsewhere?). He never bet on in games. He was the "house", covered bets for craps and blackjack players.

There were a couple of guys who had some loaded dice manufactured by someone in Kansas City. They were making a good "profit" from Fat Eddie until one got to drinking (never do when you gamble) and became greedy. Eddie stopped the game, checked the dice, and said he cold not see the imperfection but knew the dice were loaded. Game called and all dice were thrown away.

I doubt seriously that the story ended there.

I was thinking along the same lines. The guy may have still been attached to the dice when they were thrown out.

I never knew what happened to them and I am not sure if I want to know.

I do know of a threat/promise Stormy made to a guy who owed him money. The fella paid-up quickly!!

He was a hick, hillbilly, Boss Hogg-type who was a disgrace to the state. Let him go and forget him.

I originally posted about Pody Poe because I thought he was an interesting person. I do not support nor agree with his career but numerous people in history have their flaws. Barry Switzer is an example. I know people who think he is a horrible person, while others think he is one of the greatest figures in Oklahoma history. He has his flaws that he was very candid about in Bootlegger's Boy but he has done a lot for the state and to help others along the way. I am not sure Brad Henry would have been elected governor the first time if Switzer would not have promoted him. The history of this state and country is full of people who could be considerd scandrels or heros based on one's perspective of their accomplishments.

Two things that Oklahoma is known for is football and outlaws. Poe was a colorful character. Do we dismiss him for that? Look at some of the governors this state has had.

Actually it boils down to one thing. If you don't like it don't read the thread!

Naw Pop, that's what's made this thread work. Opinions are like a nose, everyone has one....We just don't get out of line very often....Remember all the others that were "griping" ABOUT THE MEMORIES THREAD? then they moved the forum and those same people followed us and the only time they get involved is when they get upset.....But hey, we're Old and we don't care....
