I don't remember one at 23rd & MacArthur, there was one at Windsor Hills (23rd & Meridian) and DeVille (23rd & Council).

That's okay. If you remember those stores you are probably a northsider...

Westoaks Nw10th & Rockwell Small Five and dime store between Safeway and Anthonys closed in the mid to late 70's I was about 13-14 at the time and heavily into Estes model rockets. Mom & I had went in to look at the closeout sale & noticed all the clearance marked on the rocket stuff. My mom asked for a mgr. and asked him how much he would take for the ENTIRE stock of estes rockets, engines, wadding etc. He said how about twenty bucks.. Sold!!! Left with about 20 sacks of stuff. It was like hitting the motherload goldmine. Miss that store

Then that is not NW Highway and Council. It would be around the 6300 block. The closest intersection is NW Highway and Rockwell.

There was not really any strip centers on that corner until the early 70's when the one on the Southeast corner was built with the theater, Big Ed's and a Pay 'N Pak hardware store, don't remember an Otasco there and the Safeway was a half mile away at Ann Arbor and there was no Otasco there either. The Northeast corner was vacant until the late 70's until Sooner Federal put in a double-wide bank, Discount Muffler is still on the Northwest corner, Hardee's/Carl's on the Southwest corner and Wal-Mart wasn't there until later.

Maybe it was 16th & Meridian? There was a Safeway where James Lighting is now and Otasco was in the corner, Andel's was next to Otasco and I remember some stores rotating through between them (like Street's) where Dollar General is/was.

Ellen Williamson, who was an executive secretary at T.G.&Y. Stores, passed away last week. She was a true lady in every since of the word and leaves many friends to mourn her passing.

Being a true Southsider, i get my streets North of the River kinda confused....You are very right about 23/meridian or McArthur but, I was remembering and I think it was on rockwell and maybe 10th street. I'll go over there tomorrow and get the right street. Jerry Julian used to be the store manager there...I helped remodel the store and I believe it was on 10th street. Wasn't a Family store...just the good old Variety store group...

I think we ought to pick ou four (4) locations and open a true TG&y Stores co./ Variety store image.....I would cost around $100,000.00 for inventory and we would just cater to the basic items that are need to the consumer..Selective Hardware ......Selective toys items.....Stationary Items....Personal items....must have a piece goods department...Small pet department

any takers?????first store could start on S.W. 59th and Penn...could get some good lease properties.....We could buy special sales for our inventory,,,,We would need to get a chain of about 10 stores (1,000.000.000.00) we could carry 38 per cent Gross overall and that would create a profit structure of $360,000 We should talk about this seriously. We have he man power we;ve just got to shake out the cobwebvs,,,,,think about it
    59th and penn
    44/Shields
    59th and Walker
    59th and May
    Airline Shoppping Center
    place up in paseo
nw 23 st by the Tower theater
    Capitol Hill Store
    44th and May avenue
    44th and Pennsylvania...
I still remember the vendors and how they worked. We could fixture ten stores fo $10.000,oo eacg, dont need the fancy Cash registers,,,I've done it befor,,,,,we couldo this if we just tried....think about it....it would take $100,000.00 per store to make it go......use some closeouts to get i started,,,,

The same thing happens to me some when I go south of the river....although not too bad since I used to do deliveries down there some. I grew up in the 16th & Meridian/Ann Arbor area, so I wasn't that far north.

There was a thriving strip center at 10th & Rockwell (Northwest corner) that had a smaller TG&Y, Anthony's, Safeway and I think an Otasco was in there as well. There is a pretty good builders outlet store in there now.

Great idea! Too bad you posted this now instead of a week ago. I really wanted to do this since it was first mentioned a couple months ago, but didn't think it would happen...so I invested in something else last week.

First OKC Freeze....I always anticipated the first freeze and would buy up exta De-Icer. Was good for business as the word would get around what store had the de-icer and you could usually get them to buy a Scraper and batteries for the flashlight or a new flashlight.....Suggestive Selling....

Bet more was sold the day of the freeze. Most people wait until then for such things.

I met one of my best friends when I went to work for T.G.&Y. Stores. His name was Dan. Long story short, he took his own life 39 years ago today. The night before, he introduced me to a young lady who was in one of his college classes. She and I have been married now for over 37 years. Something good comes out of almost every tragedy. Keep the faith!

I am the Mike you were referring to from TG&Y. I am alive and well in OKC. I am retired from Hobby Lobby, never worked at Hemisphere's, just that location when it was Hobby Lobby. Miss seeing all the TG&Y people.

My fault:....i really thought you worked at Hemisphere's but, I guess you know best....The last time you and I talked you were at that location as a Hobby Lobby....Glad you're on board here. We're all getting old and yet we still have a good time......Hey guys, this guy used to have a Brass TG&Y Sign...If he still does he has to bring the sign to the meetings.....He can tell as many stories about TG&Y as I can.....

Had to go to Family Dollar and get an item for my wife a few minutes ago....Christmas everywhere.....Clean store.....Full of merchandise...Only two things missing....#1. An employee.....#2...Customers....Sheesh, I would have been in a total panic if it were my store....Mainly that the employee (Notice, I said " THE Employee ") was on break in the back room. Wel, I guess I'm wrong...No Customers, no need for an employee....Wait a minute, I was there...
