Country Club Drive-in was MY place once they opened. Believe me, it was
WEST of Penn, like at Agnew or Villa -- I forgot which. But WEST of
Penn.

I'm thinking it was S. Agnew. and on the north side of the street.
It was across from the Hillcrest Country Club, wasn't it?

Are we allowed to say north side on this thread?

Don's drive-in was at s.w. 59th and Agnew on the n.w. corner. Maybe it was another name before that. Do you remember the Razz-Ma-Tazz across the street in the same shops as Across The Street Restaurant? It later became Panama Red's and a strip joint.

Well, no prize but at least an answer. I grew up on 54th Place - just across Villa from Coolidge. The area from 55th to 59th on the east side of Agnew was all woods previous to whatever is there now - church, apartments, shopping center...

Two play areas stick in my mind - that area we called "the Woods" at 55th and Agnew and "Bicycle Hills" which was on the northeast corner of 59th and Ross (?i think?).

In 1962 the Hillcrest Apartments were built on the Southeast corner of 55th and So. Agnew....Then in about 1963-65 the strip Mall was built just to the south of it. There was a restaurant on the far Southside of the Strip Center and it's name was Across the Street.....It was then (after Panama Red's) turned in to a meeting place where in 1969-72 an organization (get rich quick)
named Koscot (later known as dare to be great) used the place for meetings...You can check these out if you want.....Fred Flintstone was on Don's Drive-In's Sign until A Del Rancho Franchise took over the location. Del Rancho is there today....

There was however a Dairy Boy or Dairy Creme across the street on the south side...then a Sirloin Stockade was built...Then a Chinese Restaurant took over that location and then Bus Horton Ford took over and later became Southwest Ford....Now there is a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market there. My first date with my wife was on November 13th, 1964 at the Country Club Drive-in...so, I know that was where it was and before during Highschool it (Country Club) was there. However, most of my Soph. Junior and Senior year (1964) we would go to lunch at the Western Dip on South Western...

Hey, Western Dip was a 5 Star grease pit. You can't get that kind of food

They used to have a swimming pool in the courtyard. In the hot part of the summer I used to sneek in and swim in the middle of the night.

Remember KTOK with the morning guy Tom Furlong (spelling)? Captain Jim Purdue traffic reports? Was the contest dialing for dollars? There were people gathered at the radio when the cash amount was given.

They did OU football and it started early morning with ticket sales, pregame show, game, post game show and then call-in the rest of the day/night. Almost a 24 hr. program.

One of their dj's hung himself. It was pretty big news since he was highly thought of and liked.

It was a Tastee FReeze and was built new and before that it was just a lot where a watermelon eatery was!! Spent a lot of time there! The "Country Club Drive Inn" was D&D Country Club Drive Inn, (Dean and Darrell) Later it was bought out by Triple A and remained a AAA Drive Inn til it closed. The building is still there, or it was a year or so ago. It became Brown Motor Company after Triple A and then a small finance company. It was on the North side of the street, N.E. corner of 59th and S. Penn, east next door to the Sinclair station on the corner.

Yes - on the ne corner there was a house and nothing but field all the way down to 55th - i sued to live in the house on that corner around 1960

does anybody remember when koma in the late 60's had the high low game - they had a certain amount of money to win - you called in and guessed an amount and they would tell you if you were higher or lower than the actual amount - listeners would keep narrowing it down until somebody won - i called in when it was $69.69 in 1969 and won - that was a big deal at 13 years old
