Thread: Tex-Mex places we like

  1. #1

    Default Tex-Mex places we like

It seems like every thread about a Mexican or Tex-Mex place has turned into a debate about whether we like Tex-Mex, what it is, and whether Ted's is any good (see Laredo's threads). That made me think of a question, but I didn't want to derail the Laredo's thread any further.

For those who do like Tex-Mex, where do you like to go? Where are your favorite places and why?

Tarahumara's Mexican Cafe on N Porter in Norman ... very yum!

    Chelino's on S Robinson ... yum!

Tulio's in Norman at Alameda Square, Alameda and SE 12th in Norman, also very yum!

(yum = never had a bad meal there and price to taste ratio is good)

So not to confuse the Laredo's thread, but let's start the 357th thread on favorite Tex-Mex places?

Exactly who appointed you thread police? As I said, several conversations about individual restaurants have gotten derailed, but the closest "general" topic to this was a poll created in 2007. If you can find something more similar (that doesn't have the name of a specific restaurant in the topic), please let me know. Please cite the other 357 threads that you mention. It appears that the others who responded didn't have a problem with what I posted.

You know, there are a few very outspoken people here on OKCTalk who spend way too much time trying to belittle, bully, and/or intimidate the more casual users. It seems that if you don't want to create a new thread about how wonderful Cheevers/Whole Foods/other places that a few people here perceive as trendy is, you shouldn't even bother posting.

There is a mexican restaurant in Blackwell, in the parking lot of a motel right off I-35, that was one of the best mexican meals I've ever had.

In town, I think that the Iguana is really, really good.

I have to agree with Metro, I do not think he meant any harm. On the other hand, it seems you took this a little to serious Millie. I don't think anyone is trying to be the thread police.

i dont think Oklahoma even has an authentic mexican restaurant, from what ive seen its virtually all Tex-Mex.

someplaces I like are: Lupe's in MWC (they dont short-change you on their fajitas...loads, and loads of meat on your plate)

Casa Perico on 122nd and Penn. excellent food, and I like their chips and queso.

Ted's Cafe Escondido. Perhaps locally reknown as being the king of the hill in Tex-Mex (but why call it "Teds"?, thats not a very spanish name. It was Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure, not Bill and Tulios Excellent Adventure...sigh.)

Cocina de Mino. a good place to go for a cheap fix on Tex-Mex. If you want a heartery, more filling, flavorful and satisfying fill, this isnt the place to go.

On the Border. huge tortilla chips and thick queso cheese that will fill you up fast. love their mexicali rice too.

....and can someone pleeeeeeaassee help me remember what tex-mex chain has the sopapillas that are covered in powered sugar and not the more common crystalized sugar on top of them. theres some place i occasionally visit that has brown flour sopapillias in powered sugar, and they are the best ive had. any idea?

I think you're over-reacting just a weeeee little bit. Glad the tex-mex lovers can find a common meeting place, I'll be over in an I-don't-care-for-tex-mex thread (hmmm maybe I should start one...JK)

On that note, Cocina de Mino is pretty decent. Tasty tortilla soup.

Disagree. A quick glance at Metro's recent posts shows links to other threads, comments such as "search is your friend," and other similar comments. I think he's the one who overreacts sometimes. That, coupled with the fact that there had not actually been a similar thread (that I can find) in a few years, makes me feel his comments weren't exactly friendly.

That said, I'm not interested in fighting with or singling out Metro or anybody else. I just wanted (and still want) a cliff notes version of why people like their favorite Mexican/ Tex-Mex places- many of which don't have individual reviews here. I've been eating at the same few places over and over and was hoping to hear about a new place to check out.

I like Las Fajitas and the Chelinos on S. Walker. Las Fajitas has good chips, and I like their cheese sauce. I like the service at Chelinos, and the prices.

As a newb around here, having fresh threads to read about common topics, is good. Yes, "search is your friend", and I used it to look up the history of Beverly's. However, this isn't a damn database. I don't want to see years worth of threads for Tex Mex places that may be out of business now. I don't want to filter through a 30 page thread... re-opening new threads on old topics allows for new people to contribute. Given the history of words, there is nothing new to be said by any of us. I guess we should all shut up. Yes? I am new to town, I want the quick and dirty on Tex Mex. Thanks for starting this thread.

My addition, we eat at Margaritas on N. May. It isn't Tex-Mex, per se, but close. The true Tex-Mex is San Marcos, which we also like. Their beer is very cold and the food all tastes the same, which is fairly good decent. Not up to Margaritas, but closer to our hood.

Teds? Meh. They are too proud of their food and their tortillas aren't even homemade. I did like how they went back and made me some super-nuclear salsa on demand. Ted's is definitely a local's thing. It was the first place to roll off the tongues of the people we met here.

Tarahumara's in Norman...except last time I went there with a couple other people at 9 PM and they said "We're closing.." when the sign said that they didn't close until 10.

There's also an awesome place on SW 59 just east of Western called "Tacos El Boliche." It's in an old Dairy Queen building..I usually stick to their chicken offerings (taco, burrito, etc) because I've found it to be most flavorful.

Try Adobe Grill. It's closer to mexican than the rest. Not THAT close, but close. Moles and stuffed peppers, etc.

what about the restaurants on commerce street? never eaten at any, but years ago when i would deliver to them they seemed mexican and not tex-mex.
my vote goes to casa perico.

We love El Alex - about 24th & S. Robinson
the best chile verde con puerco this side of Las Cruces NM!
I think the ladies are Guatamalen
the chile colorado (red & spicy) is awesome too.

I guess it is still considered tex-mex since most dishes come with standard rice & beans.

Caldo de Res is a beef soup - big hunk of pot roast and chunks of root vegetables in a great beefy broth. no mystery meat!

The place at Commerce & Robinson has changed names recently. Ive had several great tacos there - Al Pastor & Carnitas.
