Thread: Best cake shop?

    Default Best cake shop?

I'm tired of baking my own cake every year, so this year I'm having someone else do it. What I'm wanting to do is have a carved cake, specifically a D20 (like this one, but not as large) cake. I've heard good and bad things both about Johnnie's Bakery and about Ruth's Sweet Justice, but those are the only two shops I really know of in OKC. I don't want it to be dry, which I've heard a few complaints about with Ruth's, but I also don't want it to just be a plain flavor or cake mix cake (like some of Johnnie's). Where do you guys go to get crazy cakes done, and are they super yummy too? Thanks!

Red Velvet Bakery in Edmond might be able to accommodate you. They made my bridal shower cake, my wedding cake, and the groom's cake for my wedding and they were all fabulous. I'm not sure if they do carved cakes, but if you want it to be tasty, I would most certainly recommend them!

My wedding cake was lemon with raspberry filling----sooooooooo good in the hot summer

They have a website which is easily found through google. Good luck!

    HOW CUTE IS THAT CAKE!!

I had a friend take a cake baking class, decades ago. I thought that was strange. Now, I wish I'd done it, too. Your perspective changes over time.

But, yeah, having someone else do it might be best at my house.

FYI...the more intracate a cake is the less tasty. Stuff like that isn't produced in a couple hours, but usually takes days worth of prep work, hence dry cakes.

It depends, my wife does cake decorating and the recipe is a big part of it, hers are typically more dense and do not dry out as quickly as a mix cake, denser cakes also take decorations better. The taste of her cakes even after going through a few days of decorating has a more than a few people wanting her to "go pro" and open up a shop. Right now she is looking to get licensed and use a rental kitchen and to hold cake/cookie decorating classes.

If she does that, I will look her up when we get back to town. Oh wait. Aren't you in Austin? Rats.

I hear that Brown's Bakery makes good cakes? Never tried them myself, but others have raved about them.

Yep, we are down here although she does send cookies up to my family quite often. We will probably be moving in a couple of years, not sure where yet (out near Lake Travis if we stay in the area, maybe Denver) although I doubt OKC will be the locale.

I know in the past that Brown's was THE place to get a cake, since I have been away for 6 years I am not sure if they still are but it would probably be worth checking out.

I would also recommend Red Velvet in Edmond. They've done several birthday and graduation cakes for our family, and they have always been wonderful. We did try a cake from Browns a couple of years ago, when we first moved here, and we were not impressed. Actually ended up throwing most of it out. I think there strong suit is really things like cinnamon rolls and donuts. We've tried them several times and they've always been really yummy.

    I love Rasperries N Creme!
They make beautiful cakes, with fresh flowers if you like and have never been dry.

I've also used Red Velvet in N. Edmond

We have used Sweete Memories for work celebrations, but they have been dry and nothing special.

So 3 votes for Red Velvet is promising. I hadn't heard of them before. It'd be quite the drive from south OKC/Moore, but a really good cake is totally worth it.

Looks like I won't get to have my awesome D20 cake this time, so it'll be a more boring cake now. May have it be like the DM guide instead, that'd still be neat.

    Thanks you guys! You rock.

Here is a photo of my wedding cake and the groom's cake, both from Red Velvet Bakery.

It's hard to see the detail work on the wedding cake at that size, but it was a lovely cake.

I bought the ribbon (sure was hard to find that color at the time) and the florist supplied and placed the flowers. They were yummy, too, which I was more worried about than how intricate they were.
