Good response Pete....Twilight Beach was my favorite Swimming hole...Even more than Elmwood. I remember them having a "Clown" on Saturday afternoons who could do wonders on the Diving tower. I think it was a tower and not a diving board. Cool place to go and have a good time......

It looks like Twilight Beach sat on the corner of NW 54 and Hammond. There is an apartment complex at the location now.

i guess this is all before my time, but what was the big fascination with beaches in the 1960s?

..the beach boys, frankie & annette, surf guitar, etc.

im guessing people relocated to california in droves back then and served as a huge catalyst to this fad??, or did the annexation of the 50th state cause for this jubilation?

We kind of got sturated with the beach thing. for movies and t.v. there was not much of any crosssection as there is today. Back then it was Calif. or N.Y. City. I had relatives older than me who attended dusk to dawn beach movies at the drive-in.

You mean there are 50 states???

I remember if you were below a certain age, that before the lifeguards would allow you into the deeper areas, you had to first prove to them you could swim a certain distance. Anyone else remember this?

Well, that was pretty close to being true....My older sister had a red 1954 Ford Convertible and was a real "foxy" gal....And, her three friends were gorgeous... but, my mom Made them take me....I would throw a fit if they didn't and the life guards didn't care if I drowned but they spent a lot of time around my sister and her friends.......funny how things work out....Huh???? Learned to swim there also learned how to trade for Cokes there.....just guaranteed the concession guy my sister's phone number.....got in trouble for that....

Never having been there, what was the water and beach made of. Was it a sandpit? A large pond where they trucked sand into?????????????

The only thing I remember around the area was the drag strip south of the river.............

Drag Strip was way south of there.....It was originally a stock pond. They (the owners) dredged the pond out and brought many truckloads of sand in and made a beach out if. And, they made the swimming area quite large. Where the concession area was was the area like walking out onto the beach and was shallow for some ways out. They had dug a Deep water well and had set up a fountain to keep the water fairly clear and circulated....There were four (I think) lifeguard stands (like on the beach) and plenty of people...I was a great idea and a whole lot of fun.......enjoyed going there more than eve going to Elmwood.....Springlake....Wedgewood Village...You know, Wedgewood village apartments still have the original old Wedgewood swimming pool....

I can remember my mom taking me to Twilight Beach when I was maybe 6 years old. I always wondered what became of the place.

I only remember going once. My parents and an aunt and uncle took me as a child. It was a lovely swimming place, but very far from where we lived in SE OKC, back when there were no IS bypasses. It was in the evening that we went, I had never gone swimming in a lake at night before, it was kind of spooky to me, as I recall, though there were area lights, of course.

I found this great aerial from 1964.

Looks like diving boards on the east side with the sandy beach on the west. I imagine the structures were changing rooms and concessions?

Also, what is the large fenced area just SW of the pond? Some sort of playground?

The small square in the far SW corner is an oil pump jack and is still there today. Wells been pumping for 40 years maybe.

I lived close to Twilight Beach. It was located in Warr Acres in OKC. I never went there, but I think my brothers swam there. We lived on NW 58th St. Can't remember the street it was on, but it was down from NW 56th St. in Warr Acres.
