I have a hard time understanding why the server at Pearl's Graveside deserves to make twice as much as a server at Denny's who performs ostensibly the same task.

because, in theory, the level of service goes up as the ticket price does.

i've worked everything from biker bars to country clubs (and nearly everything in between) and i give the same level of service no matter where i work.

guess that is why i've been able to keep a roof over the head and food on the table for 20+ years.

Umm..... Try hospitals? I know there is one at Saints Anthony and at the OU Physician building/parking garage. That's a lot of people and I am sure they are getting nice tips.

But sadly no, most medical valets here may get a couple of dollars what is more common, they dont get any. People really dont realize these people live off of tips or that you should even tip.

You would really be surprised how many DONT tip.

actually there is a huge banner right above the St. Anthony's entrace saying that a tip is not necessary at all. Now I haven't ever used their valet, I'm just saying...

and on their website, it specifically says this:
Complimentary valet parking is available (no tipping necessary!) at the West/Lee Avenue entrance and the East/Plaza entrance.

that's similar to what their banner says.

A great many of the sentiments here echo a fundamental misconception about tipping.

There are those who believe it is their inherent right to receive a tip.

Those people are wrong.

If tipping is "customary" within a given profession, then you accept the risk that not everyone tips the way you would like them to. That does not make them "cheap."

If you are in such a profession, and you don't like the amount you are being tipped, here's a suggestion: Get a different job where tipping is not part of your income.

I can almost predict the response - I'm one of the cheapskate tightwads that won't tip. And guess what? You're wrong. I tip very well for excellent service, and I tip barely at all for crappy service. For me, the criteria is not "I'm supplementing their income," but "what have they done to earn a tip?"

My barber does an *outstanding* job of making sure I'm happy with my or my son's haircuts. He isn't there just to go snip-snip-snip and rake in a fee. He deserves a tip above and beyond just the cost of the haircut.

An idiot waitress at a Chili's in Alabama managed to screw up all five orders (yes, literally, all five orders) at my family's table last summer, and did nothing but literally giggle like a moron when I explained to her the problem. Wanna guess what kind of tip she got? And you can rest assured the manager heard about it - in very calm, non-angry, non-hysterical terms, but if she bungled my service, she bungled someone else's, too. (And a manager at a seafood place in Florida was also told how fantastic our waitress was - by name - to be sure she got the credit, so please don't think I'm just ragging on the bad apples).

The point is that your mere presence at my point-of-service, be it at a restaurant, a valet service, barber shop, or whatever, does not entitle you to my tip. Never has. Never will. I am pleased to offer a tip commensurate with the level and quality of service I have received.

Why not practice what you preach? If you have that sense of entitlement in your attitude towards customers, maybe you know why you aren't getting good tips. Does the term "service" ring any bells?

Hm. OK, then, from the forgoing we have learned that some think that Oklahomans are rude, cheap, unenlightened hicks who don't know enough to give a decent tip.

We've also learned that there are those who have no clue what the law of supply and demand means, even applied to the most simple of concepts such as the pay for a job being dictated by the supply of those with the requisite skills versus the demand for those with the requisite skills. This is why minimum wage laws are harmful to a society - they drive up the cost of doing business so as to actually destroy the jobs they are intended to enhance. Also an illustration of the law of unintended consequences.

We have also learned that there are those who believe that typing your message IN UPPER CASE WILL GET YOUR MESSAGE ACROSS MORE EFFECTIVELY. Hm.

All told, I think we haven't solved anything but the need to use up a lot of space and bandwidth.

When warranted, why certainly, absurd levels at times. Simply because I know someone else likely stiffed a really good server, who still went above and beyond for me. Gotta respect that.

But let someone treat me like I OWE s/he a tip for doing the bare arse minimum of one's expected duties ??? ... may still get a tip, but it'll be a bare arse minimum size, to match the level of service. Get rude with me about it, and one better hope s/he is not picking a day I don't much care what others think of me .... a blood mix of west texas and west NC does not boil easily, but it also don't boil well.

my income has counted on tips for part or the entirety of my income for 20 years, because i understand customer service. you, on the other hand, really should consider another line of work.

Yes, we are all okies, most of us, and just because we don't tip more than a buck does not mean we are CHEAP. It means we feel the valet earned one dollar for the unskilled labor he has provided which took him approximately two minutes to get my car.

You are starting to sound like you have a chip on your shoulder because you are not making big tips. Call the waa-mbulance. No sympathy here.

During christmas season, cashiers in the casinos can make $200 bucks in tips. One girl made $400 in tips in one day. So maybe you should chuck the little black vest (and your attitude) and go to where the tips are!

I tip at the casino, but I also go to certain cashiers, and won't tip if I am losing or cashing in a small ticket. Cest la vie.

No, I wouldn't be surprised, at all.

A lot of people going to the hospital have other things on their mind than the valet's financial problems. It is not like going to a fancy restaurant by choice. Sometimes, you just have to go to the hospital for a loved one. I have been to hospitals with no open parking and you have to rely on a valet. Poor people, wealthy people, people with extra dollars in their pocket, people with a twenty dollar and some change. A lot of people go to the hospital not thinking they will be getting valet service. It is not something most people do everyday.

If they aren't making any money, the remedy is to go find a different job.
