Boy, that picture brought back some memories. Does anyone know when the ship was removed? I was born in 1966 and I remember the ship and the monkeys vividly so I am thinking it was gone late 70's early 80's. (That's a question btw). The new entrance is so much better I think.

I found this thread last night when doing a Google search for J.B. Nimbles, a favorite spot of mine as a kid growing up in the OKC area. I lived in Bethany until we moved to Edmond in the third grade. I graduated from Edmond Memorial in 78, but my grandparents continued to live in Bethany so I was over there a LOT. It has been fun to remember all the familiar restaurants and parks and names from our past. My husband grew up in Midwest City.
My first official job at 14 was working the games at Frontier City. I learned a lot about how those games were rigged back then. I also worked at Molly Murphy's House of Fine Repute back in the early 80's. Fun times.
Growing up, I remember lots of the places and restaurants mentioned on this thread, such as Der Dutchman, Zuider Zee, Beverly's, Split T, Charcoal Oven, (I worked there, too, at the one in Edmond). But, I also remember the Patio restaurant on the Classen Circle, and the building with the milk bottle on top of it (it's still there), the golden dome bank on 23rd Street. I remember the playground at the Twilight Drive-in Theater. I remember dressing up to like the material girl in the 80's to go to the Dungeon.
My brownie troop also got to be on the Foreman Scotty show, and I won the Lucky Penny (because I switched places in line with a girl who wanted to stand next to a friend of hers). Wish I had kept that thing.
Thanks for all the great links to pictures and the stroll down memory lane growing up in Oklahoma City.
Where do you live now?
Does anyone know if this is the coleslaw recipe that was served at
Herman's Seafood? The person says it is but I honestly don't remember
tasting green bell pepper (aka deadly hemlock). If this is the real recipe
then the bell pepper must remain.
Herman’s Coleslaw
3 pound head of cabbage, chopped
1 large onion, chopped
1 large green pepper, chopped
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup olive oil
3/4 cup vinegar
2 TB sugar
1 TB salt
1 teaspoon celery seed
1 teaspoon dry mustard
Mix the cabbage, onion and green pepper with the 1 cup sugar. Let it sit
for one full hour. Bring to boil the oil, vinegar, 2 TB sugar, salt, celery seed
and dry mustard. Pour the mixture over cabbage mix and refrigerate for 4
hours or longer before serving. Mix again and serve.
Does this sound right? Anyone know?
Toms of posts but how about the Drexel Drug fountain with the big AAA Root Beer barrel?
My grandmother lived 2 blocks away from there just on the south side of the park. We used to walk there to get an ice cream from the fountain. I have to say I don't remember the root beer barrel though. Is it possible it was on a different Drexel's or was this before my time?
Do anyone of you guys and gals remember in the "Olden days" the name of the Bread company that used to go door to door selling bread....Was it Wonder? Colonial?....I know it wasn't Mrs. Baird's as that was and is a Texas brand....Also, how about the Milkman????was it Bordens?...Gilt Edge?...really I'm trying to find out who the real dad of PapaOU is.....
Not sure of bread sales door to door but I know we had Borden's milk delivery until shortly after the first Braum's opened up at 23rd & Meridian.
Mrs. Baird's was a Texas brand, it is now owned my Bimbo Bakeries USA, the US subsidiary of Grupo Bimbo out of Mexico. They have been buying up a bunch of US bakeries and have Arnold (mostly in the Eastern US), Bimbo (Latin America & US), Boboli (pizza products), Brownberry (Midwest US), Entenmann's (pastries), Francisco (US), Freihofer's (US), Marinela (Latin America), Oroweat (Western US), Stroehmann (US), Thomas' (English Muffins/Bagels), Tia Rosa (tortillas & chips), Old Country (California, Nevada and Arizona) and Weber's in their group. I know I always liked driving by the Mrs. Baird's plant on Mockingbird Lane near SMU when I lived in Dallas, the Safeway/Homeland bread plant at 36th & Lincoln always had a nice smell as well.
The milk company on S. Agnew. Was it Cold Spot or Gold Spot? Remember Ho-Ho being sponsered by the company.
Gold Spot, there is a Gold Spot Bottle on eBay.
I remember a Meadow Gold in the area. Evidently they still have a facility in Tulsa.
Our milkman was from Meadow Gold. Townley's, Borden's and Gilt Edge also
delivered on the block. Prunette said that the Townley's supported Crooked
Oak school. They had kids going there.
The bread man could have been from any of the stores. Wonder and Rainbow
were common. Did Mead have a bakery in town? We didn't get bread from
the truck.
Did Mead have a bakery in town?
That's what I said. Mead's fine bread.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
You two win the prize again...I haven't thought of Meads bread in forever....It's kinda like remembering Brown's Bakery and then all of a sudden you go to 10th and Walker and they are still in business.......Chocolate Creme Puffs...Uh-oh just gained two pounds thinking about that....
Does anyone in the viewing audience the Boy Scout Jamboree that was held in the old Stockyards Coliseum???? I was always the "Fat Man" for our Cub Scout troop....At the time, I was the smallest kid in the troop.....Man we had a good time then.....
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
you're "Killing" me tonight...you are definitely right on the Jamboree and the Scout-O- Rama....Still had a good time during those events....Do they still do Cub Scouts....??? remember Camp Kickapoo????
