Thread: Dairy Queen ever coming back to OKC?

  1. #1

Default Dairy Queen ever coming back to OKC?

When I was growing up, there used to be a slew of Dunn's Brazier Dairy Queen stands around Oklahoma City, and over time they deteriorated and went out of business.

When they closed, I lost my Oreo Blizzards, and on that day, I mourned. There's simply nothing as good as an Oreo Blizzard nowhere, no how, no time.

I kinda thought the DQ chain had dried up until I went on a vacation trip a few years back and discovered the chain is alive and well in other states, including Texas, Florda, and a chunk of the southeast.

Given that I've seen DQ start up what appears to be national advertising in the last year or so, I was wondering if anyone might know if the chain might start up again here in OKC.

the brand is alive and well, its just a matter of who wants to invest in the franchise to bring it wherever they want it to exist.

youd think dairy queen would still somewhat exist in metro okc, i was shocked when the one in mwc closed. guess more okies prefer braums over dairy queen.

by the way, is there still any baskin robbins left in the metro area? i recall one being off of nw expresswy and rockwell for a while. did it go dry too?

The last DQ I knew of was on Main street in Norman, and it closed and was torn down about a year ago, maybe a little longer.

I believe I saw a new Baskin Robbins somewhere in town just recently, but darned if I can remember where

The thing I liked about DQ was their soft-serve ice cream was a nice alternative to conventional ice cream. Not as rich as "gelato," but not as frothy or "melty" as the stuff they pump out at McDonald's. And that's what made the Blizzards so DARNED good.

I wonder if I whine long enough someone will open a DQ for me....I had an Oreo Blizzard at a DQ just south of Atlanta about eight years ago, and it was SWEEEEEET

Yea, its too bad that the DQs dont have much presence in our state anymore. If you have driven to dallas in the last decade youll find that DQ hasnt gone away.

About Baskin Robbins. I know there is one on N. May and one in Edmond at Spring Creek Plaza. I would think there are a couple more in the metro area.

I too miss the DQ. I treat myself to a drive to Chickasha occasionally just for a cone and a blizzard. Yes I have both, it's a long drive! haha.

Every time we go to Kansas or Texas we stop and have DQ at the first one we see. They are alive and well everywhere but here. Braum's drove them out. I think Braum's is gross.

Although I like Braum's, I must admit they don't extend the quality control they exercise over their Tuttle plant to their stores. And their stores are very inconsistently managed.

As an example, the Braum's on SW 89th just east of Penn is so poorly kept that I simply refuse to go there anymore. It just looks perpetually dirty. On the other hand, the Braum's just north of SW 119th on Western is comparatively pretty nice - not spotless, but much better than the other. And I've heard other people express similar sentiments.

But Braum's isn't DQ. No one has DQ's ice cream...and I may just have to treat myself to a trip to Chickasha....

I lived in Boulder, CO recently and DQ is alive and well in Colorado - I miss it!

DQ is and has been a Texas staple for decades. They have always done regional or national advertising for many years. Part of that is probably their ad stategy and also Chickasha and other towns with DQ's are still within our TV MARKET.

As far as Baskin Robbins, they've definitely closed many stores in the last 2 years, but I've seen a few new stores open up as well. Here are 2 metro locations:

People always say it's a Texas staple...I don't know why they think that. DQ began in Illinois and their headquarters for the US is in Minnesota. They have over 5900 US locations and are in 20 foreign countries. Why China gets one on every corner and we get one in Chickasha Oklahoma just doesn't make sense. Maybe with Oklahoma getting all this new attention as being a great place during these economic times they will reconsider and open one back up.

What's coming in on Penn between Memorial and 122nd? Across the street from Taco Bell.. North of KFC ? Looks like an ice cream shop for sure.. has two giant cones on the exterior. Anyone know?

Despite it's HQ, it's still a Texas' staple, just like Whataburger (which is a Texas' company).

Why? It doesn't have anything to do with Texas. Just because they have stores there? I seriously want to understand, not trying to be ugly about it.

Yeah, the "Mix" at Braums just doesnt stack up to a Blizzard. When you put candy into ice cream..it should blend well with it..like the perfection that a Blizzard is.

...not these huge ginormous chunks of candy stacked high on top like how Braums does with their Mix.

Its not a Texas staple at all, but its largely believed that a single franchisee owns many, if not all of the ones in Texas.

the stupid advertising motto of a DQ sign being a "Texas stop sign" is probably what burned that false imagery into the minds of those who think its a "Texas thing".

Nope. From everyone I know in Texas it's always just been a "right of passage" type thing, despite it being based out of MN. Never have I heard anyone in Texas refer to the "Texas stop sign." Same goes with Whataburger. Just a Texas staple. No different than eating a "chicken fried steak" in Oklahoma, heck those might not have been invented in Oklahoma, but it's still like a right of passage to most.

This is very hypocritical because the chickashaDQ is the dirtiest nastiest fast food resturaunt in oklahoma

The 89th Street Store is under renovation. So the unclean should be going away in the coming week(s).

Maybe it's also because DQ and Whataburger also tended to be the first and often ONLY chains in rural Texas towns?

braums in my opinion will win the award for the most inconsistent run down stores ever, what happen to braums? where are coorporate managers, the need to go check their stores. one word ...........FILTHY

The Texas DQ's do have their own marketing group and a slightly different menu but they are still franchises of corporate based in Minneapolis. They were the first chain in many smaller Texas towns and in many of them hold a special place for the locals. Sonic has moved into many of the small towns as well and some of the DQ's have closed.

Now Whataburger is a Texas institution, started in Corpus Christi and was still based there until last year when the corporate HQ was moved to San Antonio.
