Gardens Conjure Movie Magic with “Screen on the Green”

The Myriad Botanical Gardens is set to entertain families and film-fanatics alike with its newest venture, “Screen on the Green,” a series of FREE outdoor movies debuting later this month. "Screen on the Green" will premiere at 9 p.m. on June 21 on the Gardens' Activity Plaza west of the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory. Two movies will be screened during the summer, and one will be presented in early fall.

“This is an idea we’ve been working on for a very long time,” said Allan Storjohann, Myriad Gardens manager. “Thanks to the Myriad Gardens Foundation, we’re now able to make it happen.”

The three films selected for this year’s program include:

June 21 “Singin’ In the Rain”
    July 19 “Casablanca”
October 11 “The Wizard of Oz”

The films in June and July will begin at 9 p.m. The October film will begin at 8 p.m.

"Screen on the Green" is hosted by the Myriad Gardens Foundation, which provides capital and educational support to the Gardens through its membership and special fund-raising projects. Event sponsors include Sonic-America's Drive-In and Cox Communications.

“For us, it’s the opportunity to offer classic, family-friendly movies in a refreshing, new environment,” said Dee Mussallam, Myriad Gardens Foundation Board Member. “Who wouldn’t want to enjoy a film classic under the Oklahoma sky?”

Two of these movies will be held the same night as the Arts Council's Twilight Concerts - so grab a picnic, bring the family and enjoy an evening filled with family entertainment right under the stars - a FREE concert and a classic movie to follow - that's a deal that's hard to beat!

This is great! Something LONGGGGGG overdue for OKC. Definitely get out and support this thing so we can see more events like this in the future.

I would luv to sue the city if any of these films doesn't have caption/subtitle.

There is a need for horror films for October.

Great idea. Not my favorite choice in movies, but I will still go to support the idea.

I like your idea for a horror flick in October Thunder......I'd love some good spook flicks. It would be nice if they opened the season with or had a special presentation of "Oklahoma". Not that I wanna see it again.....it just seems appropriate.

I think the movie, Twister, would be a suitable choice.

The movies are being provided free of charge by Cox Communications, who is helping to sponsor the event. They are gettting them from Turner Classic Movies, which is why all of the films are older film classics.

Fritter, a quick search on Google for October.

There's a whole bunch more. I just think that they should select suitable movies for October. Somehow, I don't think The Wizard of Oz is an October film.

This is great! I know I won't miss Casablanca next month. One of my favorites.

This is a great idea. Last time I was up in NYC I noticed that the NY Public Library shows movies once a week in the park right near the library. Pretty cool stuff.

Awesome. Sounds really fun, didn't get to catch the concert sunday but will be there this coming sunday. A movie outside at night will be cool.

Eureka Springs has something like this as well, for quite some time. The side of one of the old buildings is painted white and they play the movie on it.

Screen on the Green Returns with Classic “Casablanca”

“Here’s looking at you, kid.” Five of filmdom’s most famous words will hit the great outdoors as the Myriad Gardens Foundation presents “Casablanca,” Sunday, July 19 at 9:00 p.m. The screening will take place on the Gardens’ Activity Plaza, adjacent to the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory, and will follow immediately after the OKC Arts Council’s Sunday Twilight Concert. Admission is FREE.

A perennial favorite among movie fans worldwide, “Casablanca” represents the second of three films in the Myriad Gardens Foundation’s inaugural Screen on the Green program. The next screening is the family classic “The Wizard of Oz,” scheduled for October 11. Event sponsors include Sonic-America’s Drive-In, and Cox Communications.

The Myriad Gardens Foundation provides capital and educational support to the Gardens through membership and special fund-raising projects.

What makes you think the city has to provide captioning?

Tune into the City Channel and wait for the part where it gives a phone # for accommodation the city will provide upon request for any events. This is one that they failed. BailJumper, you do not know the reason why the city have to provide?!

Per the City's web page http://www.okc.gov/help/ada.html

The City will furnish appropriate auxiliary aids and services where necessary to afford an individual with a disability an equal opportunity to participate in, and enjoy the benefits of, any program, service, or activity conducted by the City
    .
    Two things to consider:

    1. One MUST make a specific request in advance in order for accommodations to be made. This is true of any event at the Civic Center (sign language interpreters are called in), as well as similar events.

    2. However, I am uncertain if the same rule above applies to events that are hosted by private organizations, even if on City property. The Screen on the Green program is put on by the Myriad Gardens Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that is wholly separate from the City of Oklahoma City. While they raise funds in support of the Gardens - a City entity - they are NOT the City, and like any other private group, are not necessarily bound to the same regulations as the City is.

Thunder - 1. Did you go to "Singin' In the Rain?" 2. If so, did you request cc service in advance?

  17. Default Re: FREE Outdoor Movies at Myriad Botanical Gardens

I wanted to go to all of these movies, since it was advertised to be free. The issue was that these films do not have built in CC, so it was not possible to provide that request. They can get an interpreter, but I hate looking back and forth.

Just about all DVDs have CC on them. It is only viewable when the DVD player have the CC turned on to display that info. If a DVD does not have CC, then it will not show it despite the DVD player and TV having CC capability. Subtitle is not really an acceptable substitution. I recall Paramount losing their lawsuit recently when they advertised on some DVDs to have CC, but was actually Subtitle.

The City of OKC overlooked potential audience that want to benefit from this event.

You must be speaking of Bryant Park. Yeah...Bryant Park is amazing. If OKC could duplicate one tenth of its coolness, I would be happy.

Did anyone go this past Sunday, I meant to but was unable, accidentally I did show up on Friday night thinking it was then, but we did catch some of Shakespeare in the Park since we showed up on the wrong night.

See, metro, if you followed @okcparks on twittter, you would know these things!

Attendance was at about 250. There were about 400+ for the Twilight Concert Series, then we had some drop (the move is at 9 on a Sunday).

Overall, it's been very well received, and Gardens staff received loads of compliments the other night about what a cool community program this is.

Thanks Fritter, keep up this series and promoting it, I will definitely try harder to make the next one, although I wish it wasn't on Sunday nights. Block 42 also does an outdoor movie on their lawn once a month.

My daughter and I went last night to see Casablanca. She had never seen it before last night. The weather was perfect and we had a good time.
