Thread: Do you Twitter?

    Default Re: Do you Twitter?

    Cuatrodemayo,

Facebook has recently added some features that originated on Friendfeed for the purpose of generating discussion. The old Facebook was similar to Myspace in that it only allowed posting on another person's wall. The weakness in this method is that it only allows the casual observer to see one side of the conversation. One could click on the "Wall to Wall" link and be able to see both sides but it is not very convenient if you have multiple people posting on your wall. This is the reason I rarely post on someone’s wall. Instead I comment on their updates.

Friendfeed has a feature of aggregating your updates from all of your social networking programs onto a single feed. On Friendfeed, you can comment on the original update right there on the Friendfeed page allowing the casual reader to see both sides of the conversation whether the update was from Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr, or whatever system you decided to add. In recent days Facebook has incorporated this feature into their page. When someone like me uses the Twitter application on Facebook, it updates my Facebook status when I am on the road. I send an update to Twitter via SMS (text) message to 40404. Others can see my updates and comment on them directly on the Facebook page making it easier to follow both sides of the conversation.

Many people that I follow on Facebook use it in this manner so I get these status updates continuously throughout the day. I make no apology for this because that is how it is meant to operate. Now if you or anyone else gets tired of getting these updates, all you have to do is look at any one of updates on Facebook and hover your mouse over the right side of it and an "options" box appears. From this options box, you can select "Less about _____". This will slow the updates from that user. You can do this enough times that you get no updates from this user. I often use this feature when someone continuously posts political comments that I disagree with.

My point is that the Twitter application is meant to keep a stream of information going so that users can comment on those updates. It was designed to be that way on purpose. One of the good things about Twitter is that it has information flowing 24 hours a day and you can check in and check out of this information flow any time you want. If you receive Twitter messages on your phone, you can send the message "off" to 40404 and they shut off for now. If one user is getting on your nerves, you can send "off and their user name" and you will not receive any more messages from this person again until you send "on" again.

I understand that it is not for everyone. People like different things and that is normal. I do not like casinos but I know many people that just love them. My point is that if Twitter is not something that you would find interesting then do not use it. If you do not like getting updates from me or anyone else, turn them off or un-follow me. I do it all the time and have no offense to anyone when I do it. It is just a convenience to check in or out when I am available with nothing to do. When I am bored sitting in the doctor’s office, it is a good time to update, and comment on other’s updates. When I am in a meeting, I turn them all off for obvious reasons. It is just an information flow that I use to check in and out all the time. Cuatrodemayo, I hope this explains the way I use it so you can choose to turn the updates on or off. I take no offense in you turning off my updates. That is how it is supposed to work. No hard feelings on my end.

i don't like twitter... i love facebook and myspace for different reasons. myspace allows me to pimp my page and show my flair. i love the music aspect of myspace as well, but it's hard to keep up with everyone cuz i have over 3,300 friends. i am fairly new to facebook and only have 400 friends on there. i love how it shows how many friends you have in common and who else shares your common interests. it seems easier to find friends from high school on there as well.

That's sort of true... but it is used for more important things too.. for instance.. I was able to keep any interested parties in the update on my baby ferret who got a hold of a Box of D-Con.

I didn't mean to imply that it didn't have it's more serious uses too. I just thought it was funny to consider it from the perspective of someone going back in time, trying to explain it. It could be done with a lot of things these days.

    Hope your ferret is okay.

    I don't twitter and don't follow twitter-ers.
Never felt my daily thougts & impulses were all that interesting to write about...

I'm new to facebook and have had fun seeing all my old friends from way back, but I get annoyed that it posts everytime you change your profile or add a photo or write to someone. Myspace seems a little more "intimate" in that way. Doesn't broadcast to all your friends everytime you say something.

I've wondered - if you delete a friend, or edit settings to see "less" of them, does it put that on a newsfeed or notice to everyone?
"so-n-so is no longer friends with such-n-such"

and I find it perpetually RUDE to invite someone to be your friend, then never say hello or reply to them. "... tsk tsk, kids these days!"

On your fb page, go to "Settings" on the top of your main page (upper right, next to your name). You can then control what others see of YOUR postings. It also gives you the option to "view" your page from others' POVs, so you can make sure the controls you put into place are working correctly.

Via your "friends" page, you can also create categories for your "friends," so some can see "ALL" of your postings, others just a portion. I am "friends" with multiple local businesses and npos. Obviously, I don't want to bombard them with my silly personal musings, so I have my page set so they don't get to see everything about me.

Kind of like kids posting those pics from their weekend drunk-fests. They can put their parents on a "need to know" only status.

I also understand it that if you "de-friend" someone, they do NOT find out, although check the fb FAQs for that.

Essentially, you can control who sees what of everything you post.

As for Twitter, there are multiple organizations out there that provide very useful information via twitter. The City provided great traffic updates during our recent ice event. Other organizations use their Twitter accounts in the same manner, so it's not all about "what should I buy at the grocery store" as some have intoned.

Just beware whose twitter feed you choose to subscribe to. And like with anything else, you can always "unsubscribe."

The only the way a person knows they've be deleted is if they notice they are no longer friends with you. There is no announcement or anything.

Twitters has been fantastic for me. I use it to stay in touch with the group of ladies I work with. Im a weightloss trainer and it is alot easier to get my clients on twitter and send them some quick updates, get feed back etc... I also just used it to market my free personal training for 1 week program and it worked fantastic for that. It is just a micro blog but yes I agree with most. If the only thing you can twitter about is when the weather changes or you get a flat tire then shut up.

Twitter is pretty useless for keeping up with genuine friends, but it's working wonders for celebs and their fans, and our own news media is using it to good effect.

You know those teasers that stations run across the bottom of the screen to tell us to watch their newscast for a certain story? Now the local news people are doing that on Twitter, and it's very effective because you can find out well in advance of the upcoming stories before you ever turn on the TV in the evening.

    I'm likin' it!

Assuming the celebs are really the ones posting. It was revealed recently that 50 Cent doesn't write his own updates...just as an example.

The City and OKC Parks Department are both now on twitter. For City updates and updates on Parks-related events and activities, the account names are:

cityofokc - "Hard" news updates and weather-related info. Streams to Newsok when they do live feeds under certain topics.

okcparks - For frequent (almost daily) updates on Parks-related events and activities.

You can also sign up for Parks-related e-mails via parkinfo@okc.gov. The Parks Department will send you frequent (about 2x / month) about Parks-related programming.

I don't get twitter. I don't like it. But you may have just given me a reason to try it all over again.

You don't have to add everyone like some people do. Just having friends, family, and whoever that you know that you'd like to keep track on their activities or thoughts.

Overnight, could not sleep, spent a few hours at Walmart, end up buying a nice set of 4 solar landscape lights...2 does not frickin work!
    That's what I just posted.
