I just found this forum and I have had fun reading all the posts of the southside memories. I'm a southside kid. Grew up by Woodson Park. Went to Garfield Elementary, Roosevelt Jr High and graduated from Capitol Hill in 1970. They all bring back a lot of memories. Generals64, I it was you that I read somewhere where you worked at T G & Y at the Airline Shopping center. When I was much younger I use to walk to the Airline Shopping center on Saturday, go to the movies and afterward stop at the T G & Y. My mother worked at the Humpty's. That's been a long time ago. HAHAHA

Thanks, this is really a neat forum. I grew up all my life in OKC. I married a girl from Northwest Classen. So I've been all over the city. After graduating I went to college at Central State and graduated in 1974. I then joined the Marines and spent 16 years. I was injured in 1988 and in 1990 they decided I wasn't medically qualified to continue so they retired me. Then we moved back to Oklahoma and I now live in Edmond.
I work with a lady that use to live on the southside on 34th near Grand. We been talking about the things we remember.
I was telling her my fondest memory about the movie theater on Western and 59th. I think it was the Plaza? There was a pizza place across the street. I was in the 9th grade and one friday night I met this girl there that I like. We went to see The Blue Max. Well needless to say we didn't see to much of the movie!!

Is it not odd how wide school districts run. Even as a 1973 grad it's hard for me to realize you went to CHHS. If living in the same area today. would you still go to Capitol Hill? Probably Grant?

townhero! The CHHS Committee will advise you as to who is and is not on the list of Okay Generals/Spartans and those that you are not allowed to converse with. You have to be careful with what you say and who you say it to.

Just kidding!! They are all good people.

It's okay to have some fun here.

You should come to the meetings. Since each meal is around $5 you should
only be out about $175, since newbee's buy everyone's meal on their first
    time.

Here's a new one...on the 80 acre section of 44th & S. Independence on the South West corner....There was for years...nothing but Sunflowers. As kids we would stake out our territory...there would be trails through that thing for ever and, if you ran into another "Gang" of kids either a fight would occur or a panic attack and everyone would run back to their area...???? Took a kid "Snipe" hunting out there....Lost him.....Got in a lot of Trouble as the police started looking for him...Welcome to the Southside GANG....Old timers review....

O.K.here we go......As always everyone knew that "The Twilight Zone" on the Northside (Carey Place) was haunted ,,....at least we thought it was...But, when I was about 8-9 years old there was an old three story house located on the South West Corner of 59th and S. May Avenue....Both streets were Dirt and Gravel at the time. Now, a lot of kids would go up to the second story because we were allowed to...Also, the big guys kept cigarettes (they had stolen) hidden in the walls. And there were pictures of girls without their tops on....Sheesh.....some of them were actual photos...How'd that happen?...Now, No one went to the third story because a kid jumped out of the window and killed himself over a girl......Why would anyone do that???? Most of you guys and gals never saw the old farm house did you????mysteriously disappeared one day along with the barns there and...............................Never know.

Also, we had dug a cave into the side of the creek one time and it caved in we were told a kid was still in there and his parents were looking for him but we couldn't tell anyone caused we'd all get in trouble....the older guys Suck...All they ever wanted to do was scare us....did a good job....If redskins/General ever gets back on this thread he has some good stories about haunted warehouses.

I'm not sure it's a myth. My Grandmother spoke about it a couple of times. I did and still eat them. Kind of tart. I have never tried to make the wine. Know how you can tell if it's sheep-shire?

The Yale theater seemed to always show great horror movies. Not the crap they call horror today. Today it's gory not scary. My brother and I would go and spend an entire day there on a Saturday or Sunday. Being grade schoolers we had a vivid imagination. Of course it was dark when we began our trip home and heading west on Commerce we had to pass three alley's to get to walker. We would take turns. One would get himself tight against the wall (Reminds me of a song) and slowly positioning our head to where one eye can see down the alley. Then the person against the wall would yell GO! At that the other person would run to the other side of the alley and look out to make sure it was clear and tell him to run.
We get to Commerce and Walker...go south on walker to 26th. Plenty of light until we start heading West on 26th. Dark and immense trees over the sidewalk..a large hedge in front of one house. Needless to say we made it home okay and forgot about the trip home in time to do it the next Saturday...

I remember people making raisin or apple jack. They'd take the fruit from the
meal and put it in a bag or a sealed can. After a month or so you'd have the
    jack. It worked.

I never got to see that house, I do remember the old one on the north east corner and it was kind of creepy back in the day. There was that house over on macarthur or rockwell and 74th I believe but there was always rumors of devil worshipers and stuff going on over there and I do recall 2 guys taking a girl over there killing her in the house but they caught them loosers thank god! Must have been horrible for the parents.

    papaOU,
I was suppose to go to Grant. We lived in one of those neighborhoods where you could choose either Capitol Hill or Grant. I played freshman football for Grant. My brother, which is 7 yrs older is a 1965 grad from Grant. So in the spring they changed the district around and my neighborhood was assigned to CHHS, there was no choice.

There was suppose to be a bridge out south of OKC (or was it Moore) that was suppose to be haunted.

I also remember when May was 2 lane. I also think it was past 89th that it was a dirt road. There were several ponds, that my brother and his friends would take me fishing. We would pay the owner and fish there all day.

I trying to catch up on the posts. I don't have a PC at home. I usually take my laptop from work and use it at home. But reading all the post is popping a lot of old memory bubbles.

T-Bird was good, but how about Daego' Red and Sweet Lucy, the higher end fruit of the vine. Then there was "Ariba, The New wine Drink," as they said!
