dont know anything about this guy but i saw the story on the news a little while ago. According to the news they said he was arrested on I-35 near Britton road this morning. Apparently the news tried to contact him later on this afternoon for comment but he was "out practicing law" or something like that. I guess he sobered up quick?

    This was in the Oklahoman:

“I regret that this unfortunate incident has occurred and the difficulty it has caused my family and my constituents,” Kelly said. “At this time I can’t say anything else. We’ll just let it go through the process.”

Maybe he should be out practicing how to obey it.

I've known Skip for years. He's always been a great guy, and I'm shocked to hear this, honestly. Hopefully this was a one time mistake, and I'm sure he's terribly embarrassed.

Yep. From what limited exposure I've had to him, he seems to be a decent guy.

  8. Default Re: Councilman Kelly arrested

Like everyone else I am shocked. It sure doesn't seem like the Skip Kelly I know.

Skip's a decent guy and I have known him for years. If this is true, we all make mistakes in some way or another. Hopefully we'll let this play out, and let the legal system work.

We have a X got a DUI thread, when sadly DUI is not all that uncommon. I presume it is because X is a councilman and not a brick layer. Oh well, first timers who do as they should usually won't get hammered in the courts. A fine, court costs, an interlock device for a period, a bit of course attendance, and a promise to be good for X amount of time. Not cheap on the wallet, but not life altering either.

Well, hopefully a bit life altering, irrespective of an accused's profession or politics.

I'm not, and also wouldn't be surprised about a few other prominent people in OKC.

Skip may be a "decent" guy, but his punishment needs to be swift and strong.

Some of you may recall - my 13 year old niece Nicole was killed by a drunk driver in Houston just a few days before Christmas. The driver was freshly released from jail after his third DUI. He was characterized as a "nice" guy who had drinking problems.

Skip is lucky this time. He shouldn't get a next time anytime soon.

I had not forgotten that about your niece. Just horrible. I hope the days are getting a little easier but it is probably too much to hope that her parents are to that point yet. Bless them.

And you are right - there needs to be swift and sure legal response. If someone stood on a street corner shooting off a loaded weapon it couldn't be any more dangerous - it might even be more dangerous.

Anyone think this will cause him to resign as councilman? Just curious on thoughts.

This may seem incredibly insensitive, but punishing Skip Kelly for something someone else did makes no sense.

You don't know enough about the facts here or about Kelly's alleged level of intoxication to even begin to make such comparisons.

Well - how about my phrase - swift and sure? I just think the response needs to be prompt and appropriate. I expect he will want this to go away ASAP. It is a blessing that no one was hurt. Thank god for that.

I agree with what Kevinpate already pointed out that the first bite will likely all the things listed. They generally do give them a first bite, so to speak. That is no comfort to the people hurt the second time but that is the way its done. Someone in his situation should know better than to get behind the wheel intoxicated. That makes me wonder if he has a problem.

My niece was an only child - my brother-in-law and sister cannot have any more. However, I have no expectation that you should be sensitive to what my family has gone through, so no offense taken.

No, I don't know the facts but I do know that if he was actually intoxicated and driving, he should have more than a hand-slap - my opinion. And yes, ECO is correct - the consequences should be appropriate.

ECO - thank you for your sensitivity.

He was intoxicated enough to get a DUI. What other facts do you need?

What do you mean,"for something someone else did"? Did someone force the alcohol down his throat? I guess I missed that part.
