Had to think on that one a minute. Yeah, I think USG is right. I'm getting mixed up as to where Katz was in relation to the Hale building.

The Hales was across Main north of Katz.

So basically where the IRS building and the little grassy area is south of Kinko's (Oklahoma Tower) is currently..... sorry I am at work and having trouble placing Main & Robinson...

That's right. Main Street went through, at Robinson, where the grassy area is now, between the IRS building and Corporate Tower. IRS building is located on the Katz Drug Store site (sw/corner) and Corporate Tower is located on the Hales building site (nw/corner).

Looking to the southwest, Main and Robinson. The prominant building is Katz.

Katz was a great hangout in the late 50's . . . . early 60's. It had a really nice granite or marble fountain bar and a mezzanine on the west side of the store with big comfortable booths. One of the best spots to meet up for a burger before a movie at the Midwest, State, Harbor (Cooper) or Criterion theater.

Downtown was the number one place on weekends for the highschool and college crowd and the sailors from the South Base in Norman . . . streets full of cars . . . sidewalks full of people.

During the demolition of the building, a friend of mine and I were able to make off with the ten or twelve foot long maple sandwich cutting board and I wound up with a six foot piece of it. I cleaned it up, put a clear finish on and used it for a coffee table for several years. It currently sits on a couple of old wood corbles mounted to the wall in an office reception area.

Thanks for starting the thread bigjkt405.

It will take decades for Oklahoma City's
downtown core to regain its lost gritty,
dynamic urban character, but it's exciting
to observe and participate in the transformation.

The Katz Drug Store has a lot of history, especially from the 1960s civil rights movement and Clara Luper.
