Southside OKC Memories....anyone?

Being a few years older than you two, I can remember going through the "Twilight Zone" area because they said that the people wouldn't come out after dark and that it was nothing to see them naked through their windows. Well, young and excited away we went. And, low and behold the first time we cruised through there there was a lady standing in front of the window with nothing on. This was to be the only time that happened though.....Do you remember the place called sleepy Hollow? Not the restaurant...but, out on S.W. 149th...Good place to take your date they got scared and got close....

Something else, where is Camp Kickapoo located? Old mind is trying to get into another gear...How about when everyone rented Honda motorcycles? TG&Y rented them for a while until people started getting hurt and wrecking the bikes....Always wanted one but my dad always said no....Got on a Cushman twice..broke my arm both times....don't need a motorcycle....rather ride a horse. Well, curiosity got to me to quickly today. I drove out to Camp Kickipoo....doesn't look like I thought I remember it to be. Went out there several times as a Cub Scout but man, that was a long time ago. You know we've talked about Southsiders....Did any of you know that a Grant Graduate (class of '64) is the defensive Coach for the Miami Hurricanes? Billy Young is in the big game it looks like...

They grew Frisky, long tall and proud they grew. Cedar is again (still?) trying to overtake all other forms, as is all too typical in our state, but rest assured, your tree planting efforts back in the day have provided ample shade and ground cover for Scouts and leaders for many years.

I grew up during the mid-70s and early 80s, in a little house, set back off the road, on SW 119th, between Penn and May. The house was sold in the late 80s and it is now the little retirement patio homes sitting in front of Fisher Elementary school. I think they are called Autumn Leaves.

There was absolutely nothing out there, even during the early 70s and 80s. The area that Fisher Elementary is on, was just farm land. We had barbed wire fence going around our little two acres. Just west of us, there were ponds that we would go fishing in. We'd just hop the fence and go fishing. Now, a little doctors office sits there - I think its a breast cancer office or some type. At night, you could sit outside and watch fireflies and there was little traffic or noise.

I'd also just hop the fence on the east side of our property and cross the creek and would be at Golf Acres where I worked from my 9th grade year until I graduated in '83. If you go into the housing development that was built on the old Golf Acres site, and go all the way to the back part, you can see the original white ranch style house that belonged to the owners. Golf Acres went through at least two owners that I'm aware of - both of which I worked for.

Our addresses were rural routes.

SW 119th was a two lane road.

Village Green was probably upper middle income homes and those are now probably 20-40 years old now.

If you went much further west than May and south of 119th, it was dark and just farm land. It was so dark and unpopulated and hard to see anything that a guy, Jerry Krauss, a senior at Moore High, was killed in a car wreck because a person couldn't see the stop signs due to the high weeds. At least thats what I remember of the incident.

Very different times...Now, I live off SW 119th between Penn & Western. There are houses everywhere, businesses, churches.... great area to live in, but I sure miss the fireflies and all of that farm land and just being able to hop the fence and go fishing.

I graduated from Capitol Hill High School in 1966 and The Spot was the place to hang out. It is located about Southwest 27th and Western, it is still there but is now a restaurant and not a drive through. My mother attended CHHS in 1943. I also remember after the football game when our Star Quarterback, Lary Herdlitchka, won the game, we would go to Sussy's Pizza Place for pizza to celebrate! We would also cruise through Hollie's to check out the guys.
Those were the fun days!

prunepicker....you were right, the old 77 Drive-In was at 9301 S. Shields....the address indicates it was on the west side of the street and even farther out than I remembered.

Whoever wanted to know about the Bison Theater....this site shows that it was at 1314 NE 23rd Street in OKC.

I was beginning to think I was remembering something that really wasn't there.....but check out the Circle Theater....it was at 2510 S. Robinson. Read all the comments at the bottom of that page. It was called the Capitol Theater when I used to go to it in the early 60's.

I know it sounds dumb but, when they tore down the Redskin Theater I got a brick out of the pile...More junk to collect...also have a Grant brick from the old school. Yes, those were fun days! I graduated from SE in '68, Del Rancho on 59th was our hangout. A car load of us girls would cruise through the "DR", as we called it, then head down the street to go through the "Triple A" on 59th, which was Grant's hangout at the time, and then head to The Spot. We would sometimes make that circle several times a night. I still crave the pizza from Sussy's.....I wonder why we thought it was so great? And I wonder if we were to have a slice of it today if we would REALLY think it was the best pizza....funny how you think you remember things and you really don't. That's why this thread is so great....other people are doing the remembering for me!!

Well....you know it wasn't sleazy back when I was going to it....I would have been about 10 or 11...not sure my mom would have approved! I checked in the Oklahoman archives and in the summer of 1960 some of the movies that were playing at the Capitol were the 3 Stooges in "Stop, Look and Listen, Burt Lancaster in "Ten Tall Men" and Doris Day in "Please Don't Eat the Daisies". I also saw an article in October 1963 where the parents of an 8-year old girl sued the theater for $25,000 when hot popcorn oil splashed on her legs.

Where was the drive inn on Shields located at? Is the building still standing was this the 77 drive inn?
