Thread: New LCD HDTV

    Default New LCD HDTV

Hey Gang... I wanted everyone's opinion. I am getting ready to pull the trigger on a new HDTV. Here is my problem. For $1500.00 shipped to my door (no tax, no shipping), I can get either...

    1. Samsung 46" LN46A650 Touch of Color, 120Hz, 50000:1 Contrast Ratio, 4 MS response time

    -OR-

    2. Samsung 52" LN52A550 60Hz, 30000:1 Contrast Ratio, 4 MS response time

These are both great TVs but the 46" is a better looking TV. This has been verified by both online reviews and in person reviews at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. I can't decide between a 46" or a 52" although the 46" has a better picture. We sit about 15-20 feet from the screen.

    What do you think????????????

Although it smaller, for the money, I'd go with the 120Hz box.

120hz for sure. i have a phillips 47" thats 120hz and I makes on helluva a difference. some 60hz tv's have digital controls that kinda make a 60hz lcd look like a 120hz. ex. phillips has a digital natural motion. its unbelieveable. 120 is worth the small downgrade in size. the 6" is more than worth giving it up.

I just watched a program ( CNN I think ) saying that most retailers are trying to get rid of TV's before the Digital transition and that now is the time to go wheel and deal to get a bargain.. might check it out?

Yes, better specs (120Hz/Contrast Ratio) make the 46" a better TV.

A friend of mine has the 46" Samsung. My TV is a Samsung that is a bit higher up on their food chain and I can't tell the difference. I'd go with the 46", it's a very nice TV.

Do they mean trying to get rid of 60Hz digital TVs or just digital TVs in general? I would think that after the transformation, people would be hurting more for a new digital TV (or a converter box) rather than before.

I can't justify a new TV yet. I don't watch enough TV, and besides, my ten-year-old Sony just WON'T DIE!

I finally picked up a digital converter box the other day, just to have for those times our satellite service gets interrupted during storms (for storm updates, etc).

Thank you everyone for your help. I ended up going with a third option that reared its head last night. Fry's Electronics (FRYS.com) put a Samsung 52" LN52A650 on sale for $1650 with free shipping (no tax since it is online). I opted for this! Again, thanks for all of your help.

Insider - I got the same TV a few weeks ago. It's awesome! Love it

Congrats, I really like our Fry's store down here. They need to put one in OKC.

Sadly, I missed my chance to get one of these (ad from 1969). And to think, it was completely solid-state (except for the one quiet motor for UHF!).

The site I got this from states that $2,000 in 1969 is about equal to $12,000 in 2008. Those new LCDs aren't looking all that expensive now.

Yeah, I just got the heads up from the Commander (Mrs. AAC2005) to "think bigger", so I'll be doing some research myself in the near future. I love the Sony (we currently have a 200lb WEGA), but I'm beginning to think that there are other brands just as good for a lesser price.
Right now, I'm looking towards a 46" 120hz...wish me luck.

Nice! I like the way your Commander thinks!

LOL! I wish I could say that she was thinking about ME, but she just wants to get rid of the hay-uge entertainment center we have now, and the new set up she has in mind will accommodate a large thin-screen very nicely, so...I'll take what I can get!

I saw a Conn's ad on TV here (in Austin) about a 42" Sony LCD for $1,199 with a free Sony Blu-ray player. Not sure if the OKC store has it but I think their ads are the same everywhere. Tomorrow might be the last day since they run a Sundat-Saturday cycle.

I'm kind of late, but be sure to post a link up. I'm thinking about getting a 46" Sony HDTV but I'm thinking about waiting for Black Friday. Maybe there'd be more sales.
