I remember standing in line at Almonte in June of 1982 to see the 2nd Star Trek movie, and I had stood in line at South Park to see the first one in December 1979...alas, as you note, both are long gone.
General, that Shakey's on Western is precisely the one I was remembering. I stood on the tabletop one time (but I don't think it was my birthday, though). I've heard lots of good things about Jo's in Purcell, but haven't tried it.
I remember when they built Winchester Drive In on Western, driving by each day as they put up one more section of the fabulous neon entrance sign with the waving cowboy. The marquee section used to be encircled in alternating red/green neon, but they took that part down years ago. I'm delighted that sign has endured the years, and they work hard to keep it running....
