I don't know about wind, but with earthquakes the buildings have to give and sway in order to absorb the shockwaves.

Some are even built on rollers.

Building movement is sometimes the best way to deal with the elements.

Rollers? There are wheels or tires under the towers?!

No not hardly. Let me first say that I understand their concerns, but if you are going to do this, don't call it the Freedom Tower. We are going to build the WTC back even better than it was before to show are strength. However we are still afraid of you. Not to mention they could have built this as tall as they wanted to but no let’s make it 1776 feet. Let get back on the topic of the Devon Tower or I will rant all night.

This is a quote from Skyscraperpage.com about the base of the Freedom Tower

"-The new design attempts to address the NYPD's concerns with its 186.5-foot-high reinforced concrete blast resistant base, which will contain the Freedom Tower's 80-foot tall lobby and three of its mechanical floors.

    - The base of the tower, which was originally to be clad in polished steel and titanium like 7 WTC, will now be covered in vertical bands of glass prisms. The base will have no windows except for several tall narrow ones which will be placed a minimum of 25 feet above the ground."

Is that the Freedom Tower? All that space is where the Twin Towers once were?

OMG, the space had gotten so much smaller! Freedom Tower already completed?!

It is a beautiful building! I'm amazed they couldn't build one for the OKC (Murrah bombing)!!!

    Holy Bunny!!!

It's not completed...that is just a REALLY good rendering. Quite remarkable job.

    This is more like it:

No it isn't completed yet. They haven't even got 5 stories above ground yet. Everyone involved keeps fighting over the smallest things. This is the second design. The first design was chosen and then construction was halted as they chose a second design. There is a really good chance that the Devon Tower will be competed and occupied before this is completed. 10+ years after the attacks.

By the way the whole design plan is wonderful (except for the base of the tower) and I think (hope) the memorial will be appropriate for the victims and their families.

    I'd actually bet on that.

No, it is not going to occupy all that space. There is an outdoor memorial. Two sunken pools in the location of the former towers, I believe.

This shows the whole site, but it's the previous Freedom Tower design (which was better IMO).

OMG I thought it was done already. ROFL

I did hear about Trump being a major role in being a crictic of the Freedom Tower.

Why don't they scrap it all and come down to OKC for a real look at the memorial and get it right in NYC?

some people here seem to think that theyre going to build the tower out of jenga blocks. sheeesh.
the freedom tower will never be built as long as the gov. of nyc is in charge. it should have been built a loong time ago. really i would have trump build it and let him run his name in giant gold letters up and down the building. gaudy? yes, but it would have been done years ago.

Anyone notice how much the original design looks like the Statue of Liberty?

I agree. The Freedom Tower masterplan is much better than the one that Trump wanted that included rebuilding two more ugly rectangular boxes.
