It's hard to believe that the "little thread" I started a couple of months back has grown so much!

All of your contributions have made this so enjoyable. Some of your recollections are a bit before my time, but I've got to have my older sister (the '63 -or '62, I always forget- USG valedictorian, and the only one who is computer literate) to visit and post.

You mentioned a chain raceway, I think you're remembering Malibu Grand Prix.

There is still a Neptune's at 33rd and Classen - just a few blocks from me. They're packed at lunch every day. Fresh baked bread - yum!

I'm still grieving the loss of Southwood at 59th and Western - the corner looks horrible now, in my opinion.

I had heard that the congregation just literally gave up at Southwood church and it dwindled to nothing. That was an icon on the southside..hated to see it go.

I remember Minnie Pearl's but I don't remember where it was, it didn't last long at all however. I have a couple of more questions see if anyone can answer...Teri:...before your time.

1. On S.W. 29th st. there is (or was) an upholstery shop (Hoaglin's) for years and years...next door was a drive -In eating joint that eventually went out business. What did the next business sell and what was the name?

2. Doses anyone one remember the first McDonald's in OKC?....it was on 29th st. S.W. on the south side of the street not far from Economy Square. I was told today that the Roosevelt Jr. High Band played for the Grand Opening. That was in the fall of '61.....

That's Cool:......Iremember the fire Department came to Arthur and inspected all of our bicycles and tagged them. The greased the wheels/axles, adjusted the seats to the kids that owned them, they went as far as giving a school on it...What happened to those days? I guess now they would have to have a gun safety course.

I also remember in the 3rd and 4th grade taking the Polio vaccine...Matter of fact I still have the pin they gave you after the third shot. I think mine was for running faster than the nurses...The shots hurt............

So did I! Didn't it cost a quarter? I remember riding up to the back where the pop machine was and going through that door to a wooden desk. The back porch light was always on, day or night.

That was Quick's long before it was Neptune's. We cruised it every Friday and Saturday.

A designer friend of mine designed the firehouse`s we have today. Remember where the firehouse on 59th used to sit? when it was in its old location they came to my gradeschool HILLCREST ELEMENTRY nad set up a little town and we took our bikes through tthe course and got our tags at the end of the course from a fireman.

Also brings back memories of tetherball on the west side of the school and kid mini tournaments..there was a short blond headed boy no one could beat. Little creep I still dont like him hahahaha

Also dodge ball against the school wall...just don`t get any better.

You guys were reight, It cost 25 cents when they did our bicycles. My dad bought my bicycle from some "Junk Yard". He paid $1.00 for it then he bought two new tires and tubes another $4.00. He put it all together and it was so cool. No fenders a total Aluminum frame Pearson Leather seat (worn out) and longhorn handle bars. It was the big thing in the late 50's for all the "big" guys to name their cars so we started naming our bicycles and of course you had to write it on the frame. My bike was name "Minnie Troubles". Travel many, many a southside mile.

wow... i've always wondered what that was for. just seemed pointless to have an elevated crosswalk over a street that didn't get much traffic. makes sense now.

say... you'd probably know... did many houses have to get the axe when 240 was put in? was 74th an artery or was it just a small street on the edge of town? just curious how that whole area looked before the interstate.

What a neat thread! I was an OKC "southsider" between 1973 and 1975. My father was the minister at the old Hillcrest Church of Christ on the corner of 59th and Villa. All these posts have brought back so many memories.

Nearly every Sunday we would go to the Dodson's Cafeteria at the corner of 59th and Penn to eat lunch with a huge group from church. Part of our routine was going to Crystal's every Wednesday afternoon for the buffet. It was such a cool place.

The big TG&Y on 74th was within walking distance of our home on SW 70th. The land across the interstate from TG&Y was a big empty field at that time and you could walk across the field to the pedestrian overpass. I remember riding my bike in that field for hours. Circus Time was near that same intersection (74th and Penn) and I remember the great Coke floats there.

Bobby and Kay Murcer lived right across the street from us, but they were rarely there as he was in his heyday with the Yankees. So sorry that he has left us.

Seems like I remember a theater at the corner of 44th and May. Does anyone remember the name? It was in a big shopping center with block walls painted white. I remember seeing a few movies there with my "first love."

The roller rink on Western holds a lot of memories. Wasn't there a miniature golf course right there on the same property?

Kiern's Drive-In was owned by some family friends. As a matter of fact, the son of the owner followed my family to Arkansas and was our youth minister back in the late 70's.

I had an uncle who lived in the apartment complex at 59th and May. We spent a lot of time there in the summers enjoying the pool.

1. Minne Pearls opened up *several* locations in Oklahoma City in the early 70's, and I think Minnie Pearl was present at one of the openings, if not more. The buildings were a bit unique for their flared 45-degree walls, and a giant picture of Minnie Pearl atop the sign. As noted, sadly, the chain didn't last very long.

2. Southwood, over the years, had a variety of differing problems, all of which over time had their own role in the church just not enduring. The biggest issue(s) over the last few years were the changes in the demographics around the area, combined with the aging population/membership of the church. I agree, that trailer-trash used-car lot that sits there now is an abomination. Absolutely ghastly. Rumor had it that 7-11 wanted to buy the property and build a store to compete with OnCue across the street, but when OnCue found out about it, they made a counter to keep 7-11 away. 7-11 backed out, and built their new store on Penn about a half-mile or so south.

Anyone remember the "original-style" Arby's Roast Beef store and neon ten-gallon-hat sign that used to stand just north of Southwood? Those neon hat signs are becoming national monuments....

3. McDonald's: Although I don't have any insight on the 29th street location, I can offer that the world's first McDonald's drive through was at the now-about-to-be-torn-down McDonald's at SW 59th and Penn. Looks like its going to be razed and rebuilt as one of the newer, hipper McD's we've seen pop up. They had a double-arch menu board, and you yelled your order into Ronald McDonald's pocket, then drove around a bunch of McDonaldland characters to the window where you picked up your order. They were test-marketing the concept here in OKC.

As for me, along Penn, my greatest nostalgic loss is Shakey's Pizza. At the ripe age of 43, I've never had a pepperoni pizza yet that tasted quite like a Shakey's pepperoni pizza....and it goes without saying I've never seen a blue-and-red-keyed player piano since those days, either

We ate at that Arby's. Next door was a Shaky's. All you could stand pizza, chicken and potatoes for $1.59.

Shakey's Pizza Parlor was over on Western about where O'Reilley's Automotive is. I remember that they made you stand on top of the tables on your birthday. Their Pizz was great and so was the atmosphere. However, if you want the best Pizza since Sussy's closed down go to Purcell and eat at Jo's...They serve Pizza and soft drinks/tea etc. If you order a salad, they'll tell you this ain't no salad shoppe...It's worth the drive.

I remember when they built that McDonald's ...............Long time ago.........

How about the OTASCO Store:????? Do you remember the 56 chevy at Rowland's Car lot that had two front ends? The car still exists in the OKC area, it is however kept garaged. My wife's class reunion borrowed from Rowland and used it for a prop....

So glad you've joined us! The movie theatre you remember was the Almonte 6. I watched many a movie there. When it opened, it seemed like a real coup for the neighborhood (I lived about 6 blocks away). Felt like we'd "arrived".

Dodson's holds many a memory for me also! As a kid, for years I always ate the very same thing every Friday night with my parents: Veal cutlet, mashed potatoes and cream gravy, broccoli and cheese, corn, and a hot roll. And, remember those "oatmeal lace cookies" they sold in their bakery? I have a friend who knew the Dodson's and has their recipe.

We spents tons of time at Crystals - one of my favorite memories was noticing how the eyes of one of the old timey Victorian portraits looked. I insisted on getting closer, standing on a chair to get a closer look at why the eyes looked so strange. As I touched the picture, one of the sliced olives that someone stuck over the eyes fell off.

in the late 70's, hillcrest and southern oaks merged into one congregation, renamed itself oakcrest and met at 52nd and walker... i used to go there. that congegation later moved to 89th and mckinley. consequently, shields church of christ (64th and shields) moved into the former oakcrest building and started calling themselves south walker church of christ. i know a bunch of people from hillcrest.

i think you've got it mixed up, teri... almonte was on 59th and may. it was southpark that sat on 44th and may. the theatres are long gone, but both buildings are still standing.
