Thread: Things to Do in OKC

Default Things to Do in OKC

I have a group of friends/family coming to OKC for a guy's weekend (8/15-17) to celebrate a 30th birthday and thought this board would be a great place to get some ideas on things to do and places to see while they are here! They are all from Kansas (mostly rural) and have never spent much time in OKC. So far the only things I have planned are to stay at one of our downtown hotels, a big steak dinner at Cattleman's, a Redhawks game, and probably a lot of time at the local beer establishments. I'm looking for fun, original OKC things....like lunchboxes at Edna's, steaks at Cattlemans, etc.

    Any ideas?

I love Louie's on Lake Hefner at sunset. And it's kind of a guy's place because there's so many screens with games playing, great bar-type food, and good drinks.
Nonna's, Bricktown Brewery, the Cowboy Museum, the bombing museum memorial, Looney Bin Comedy Club, Oklahoma River Cruise... Check out the Gazette for events, too.
The fair is going on during that time, too.

Go to the Paseo! Sauced is a cool restaurant.

    • McNellies and/or Bricktown Brewery
    • Remington Park (they have casino games and race simulcasts even w/o live racing)
    • Oklahoma River boat trip
    • Golf at Lincoln Park (pretty course with some nice city vistas)
    • Bike ride around Lake Hefner
    • The Zoo (it's actually pretty great, even for adults)
    • Look into live music that may be going on
    • Chicken Fried steak at Chuck House; or for a more upscale version, Cheevers
    • Toby Keith's
    • Red Pin bowling lounge in LB
    • Campus Corner in Norman has several good bars and restaurants

Just some thoughts off the top my head. Have fun!

I also recommend McNellie's. They have good food, atmosphere and a great beer selection. A perfect guy's guy establishment.

    You can:
    Climb at Rocktown
    Kayak the Oklahoma River
    Sail Lake Hefner
    Race at Pole Position Raceway
Remember at the OKC National Memorial
    Gamble at Remington Park
Stroll Bricktown and the Myriad Botanical Gardens
View art at Untitled (Art Space) and the Paseo District
    Learn at Science Museum Oklahoma
    Tour the Oklahoma Capitol
Let it hang at the Matt Hoffman Action Sports Park
Ride the attractions at White Water Bay and Frontier City
Antagonize the animals at the OKC Zoo
Visit the ASA Softball Hall of Fame, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Harn Homestead Museum, and Oklahoma History Museum

Tell them to also come during the NBA season; that'll be fun.
...this shortest straw has been pulled for you

Best patio in Bricktown: Biting Sow at night. $3 Jack and cokes.

Assuming budget, seat availability and interest in a right fair country voice in a lass, Sara Evans is at Riverwind the 16th I believe. But for other commitments, it's where I'd be that night. I got hooked on her voice quite a few years back.

Yep, much better than Cover Girls and you don't have to deal with the Valley Brook police.

    In August??

And don't go to the Looney Bin in the far 'burbs. Stooges is right in Bricktown.

Definitely agree they should see the Memorial. Rocktown Climbing Gym (formerly OKC Rocks) is a GREAT idea for guys, even if they've never climbed before.

And take them to McNellie's for sure, including a trip to the roof at night.

Not the big-time fair of course but this one:
Oklahoma County Free Fair — Oklahoma County

I highly doubt that's "THE FAIR" that he's talking about.

Went to the red pin last night, was very impressed.

I never actually enjoyed bowling before.. no smoke, no drunks, no fat people(you have to go down some stairs to get there), and shoes that didn't hurt my feet.

    it is.

no smoking, overpriced drinks, $55 for a lane, and the bonus is that if your group shows up in typical bowling attire(jeans, tshirts, "normal person" casual) you're treated like you showed up and took a dump on the floor.

66 bowl has a much friendlier atmosphere, with live music on the weekends.

Glad there were no fat folks there to ruin your evening. I hate it when that happens.

    Right. It's not in August.

Good thing you didn't go there around noon. I was there and I'm kinda fat. Guess that would have completely ruined your day, eh?

Leo's BBQ. Guys like BBQ, right. Mine does.

Or, you can try to chase down some Bobo's fried chicken on 23rd street. I still have never done that but every guy I know has. LOL

I don't know these guys or what the weather will be like while they are here but the museum has cocktails on the skyline on Thursday and Friday nights. If it isn't scorching hot, the view of downtown is lovely and the mojitos aren't bad either. You could show them a lot of marble art from the Louvre too while you are there.

Speaking of good minty drinks, Cafe Do Brasil, has a nice patio and good drinks.

Don't take them to Night Trips. I am sure they have strip clubs where they are from and that is tacky.

Good luck deciding and have fun. The Gazette is indeed a good place to look, when it comes out on Wednesday, for more ideas.
