It will go on the river at the former airpark.
is that confirmed? i must have missed that.

  3. Default Re: Humphreys Ferris Wheel

No, but Humphrey's upcoming projects are:

    1) the Flatiron

    2) Crown Heights mixed use at 36th & I-235

    3) Downtown Airpark

So you tell me where it's going to go.

i don't think it is, i think we're just assuming that is the most logical place, since he owns that land as well... unless people have heard something i haven't

I didn't know it was going to be put at the old downtown airpark. That is so far away from anything! I really could care less about this now. So much for having really cool pictures of a ferris wheel in the downtown skyline.

I think the ferris wheel should be close to downtown, beside the river.

But the problem is, there is so many old buildings and ugly stuff, if a ferris wheel is positioned there, to look at.

Given the wheel's height, there are not many locations in the city which permit a full on ugly avoidance mode. The river side will do as well as anywhere

    the old downtown airpark
Not an OKC native - where is this location?

Right now, maybe. But how about in 10 years when I-40 is moved and is hugging the river at Western and the area between the old I-40 and new is starting to be developed. I think that will spill over to Downtown Airpark and spur new development there. I think he's looking a decade or two ahead with this placing.

the downtown airpark will be a perfect place for it once the highway and his riverside lofts are finished.

So anyone heard anything yet? Seems like it would be rather strange for him to warehouse something that big for that long you know.....

I believe he said the announcement wouldn't come until next spring at the very earliest about his riverfront development.

I wouldn't expect any kind of announcement due to the uncertainty of the econmony.

I think it's more of lack of access to financing than uncertainty in the local economy. Many projects would be underway or announced if they had access to funding.

February 17, 2009 Report of the Director of Riverfront Development (Pat Downes):

"A preliminary master plan has been drafted for the former Downtown Airpark parcel, with a presentation likely to be scheduled in the coming months. The early numbers continue to suggest a total project scope, at full buildout, in the mid nine-figure range. The timing of this project will likely coincide with the completion of ODOT's I-40 realignment project in the vicinity of this Western Avenue site."

The same basic information has been in Downes' reports since at least December or November of last year.

I don't know if anyone has pointed this out before or not, but this Ferris Wheel is the same exact model that Frontier City currently has. It's a "Giant Wheel" made by Chance Manufacturing. It's still their current model - Chance Morgan

I guess it's cool having a ferris wheel somewhere, but seriously, I don't see what's so unique about this one, besides the fact that it's the SMPier's wheel.
