Thread: No Country for Old Men

Default No Country for Old Men

I believe this film is opening in OKC over Thanksgiving but it has been in limited release out here for a couple of weeks and I saw it last night.

It's been getting a huge amount of buzz and it's all well-deserved. It's very different than any previous Coen brothers movie, although their first, Blood Simple, has some similarities.

To be sure, No Country is bleak, grim and hard to watch in parts. There is not a single note of music throughout!

But it is also completely riveting and haunting in a way that is difficult to describe. I was squirming in my seat most the time, unable to anticipate what was going to happen and almost not wanting to know.

The pace is incredibly slow and the dialog is minimal... But it all works. There are some amazing scenes but I don't want to give too much away.

I highly recommend this film but be prepared for lots of violence and blood... But it all serves the story well and it's just simply a great movie.

If and when you go, I encourage you to pay close attention all along the way.

At the ending, lots of people seemed disappointed and I think it was because they missed the central theme. Also, some of the plot points (like the business/personal relationships among most the characters) are confusing.

But I really enjoyed the fact I had to think about everything after the movie was over. I'd really like to see it again.

    Saw it on Thanksgiving.

It's very well made, but I think flawed in it's ability to convey the message the Coen's (and Cormac McCarthy) wanted to portray. The end is very convoluted and there are too many unanswered questions. When I say this, I don't necessarily mean in the plot, but just too many things that are unclear to the audience. I have no problem with asking the audience to think, but there were too many things that left the audience saying "what??" or "who??". In particular was one scene with Jones and a new character at the very end of the film. This new character is not explained and although I believe he was intended to enforce the central theme "no country for old men", the result was confusion for myself and many other viewers, based on what I've read on message boards.

Nonetheless, it is a very admirable film and Javier Bardem does an excellent job as the psychopathic Anton.

When that movie ended, I had one thought :

    WHAT !?????

Obviously, I'm not that deep... but seriously, wth just happened?

Very unexpected and sad and not something I enjoyed.

On that note, I'm dying to see 'Horton Hears a Who' coming out today because that was my all time favorite book as a child.. so that tells you how 'deep' I really am!

You might not want to take my advice on movie recommendations! lol

I LOVED it. Not immediately though. We saw it in the theater and I came out thinking, "that was just ok" but the more I really had to think about it, the more I realized I really like it. Makes you think and draw your own conclusions at the end. I highly recommend it, very deserving of Best Picture.

I thought it was great! Best "bad guy" I think I've ever seen in a movie ... well deserved Academy Awards!

This movie looks awesome on Blu-ray. Well, it does if you have a HDTV with a good enough display to deliver the goods on image quality.

I just recently rented this and after my first viewing, I was a little disappointed, partly because it wasn't the kind of story I was expecting. But, then again, it IS a Coen brother's film so I shouldn't have had any expectations other than it being out of the ordinary.

However, I think I'll view it again to see if I can get more out of it. It seems like a movie that's tough to grasp everything if you don't pay close attention and sit through it beginning-to-end. I had distractions and had to stop and come back to it a couple times.

Anton is a seriously creepy bad-guy though. The tension in the gas station scene is unbelievable!
