I would like the Thunderbirds exept of the Thunderbird Casino. However if we were to shorten it to "Oklahoma City Thunder" . I like the sound of that.
Hmmm, why not keep the Sonics? Tie it in with the restaurant franchise and we can call the cheerleaders "The Carhops".
Portland is SOUTH of Seattle.
Oklahoma City 89'ers
Seattle will keep the Sonics name.
Oklahoma City Sonics is not swell. 89'ers is much gooder.
OKC patrol - You cannot sit here with a strait face and tell me that OKC deserves to have the name Sonics over Seattle. What are you smoking dude? you guys also thinking about ripping off the 76ers name. Jeez what a bunch a biters.
Man, Clay really got you guys drinking his kool aid. Just watch while he gets richer and you get poorer!
Does that mean the 49ers also ripped off the 76ers? Oh wait, the 76ers didn't get that name until 1963, so I guess they ripped off the 49ers.
Who cares? It's just a number and it's not even the same number. The Declaration of Independence has nothing to do with the Gold Rush or the Oklahoma Land Run.
Seattle lost the NBA. Get over it.
A few names that I wouldn't mind that have ties to Oklahoma City:
Tribe
Bison
Force
Barons
Oilers
Wildcatters
Renaissance
Fizz, I like your idea, going with something original, what about something ultra-original like the . . . Oklahoma City Storm ?
because of all our storms and stuff ?
Dawg, as long as Clay Bennett owns the team, he'll use whatever name he wants. The citizens of Seattle had their chance to support the team. On March 4th, the citizens of OKC showed the world they were ready to support the NBA. Since OKC stepped up to the plate, I would believe we're deserving of the name Sonics. With that being said, I doubt too many people would actually want the name. I'm just trying to illustrate that OKC deserves whatever name is mentioned. Afterall, Clay Bennett, an OKC investor, owns the team and this franchise will be overwhelmingly supported in OKC, unlike they were in Seattle.
...this shortest straw has been pulled for you
So what you're saying is that you wouldn't have a problem with Clay bringing the women's current team name and use it for Oklahoma City's men's team? I think the NBA would have something to say about that.
Also, I don't want a team name that currently belongs to an active team playing the same sport. If "Storm" belonged to a team playing another sport, I might be more supportive.
I also don't really have a problem with the team remaining the Sonics. I understand the arguments against. I just personally don't have an issue with it. I think it was mentioned a long time ago, in a thread far, far away that "Sonics" could be tied into Oklahoma's rich aeronautical and aviation history. I'd rather see that than something tied to cowboys n' indians, oil derricks or the land run.
I'm not that against the Thunderbirds. However, I always picture Lake Thunderbird when I see that name, or the car.
I'm really liking the Oklahoma City [oil] Barons. Ties in perfectly to Oklahoma City b/c downtown/Bricktown was initially built using oil money.
or the Oklahoma City Just Sayins
Oklahoma City Surge

That's only if we get the team from New Orleans.
Personally, I like Thunder. But that's only because of the fact that I hate pluralized names for sports teams. Sonics, Blazers, Jaguars, Bees, whatever. If you're a "team" make it singular to promote the team dynamic, attitude, and cohesiveness that's required to play basketball at a professional level. Individualizing the players only inculcates showboating and ball hogging by poor sportsmen.
I'm so full of crap.
Your eyes are brown
" You've Been Thunder Struck ! "
Oklahoma City Outlaws would be perfect. I mean, just look at other regional NBA basketball team names:
Houston Rockets (NASA)
San Antonio Spurs (cowboys)
Dallas Mavericks (another name for an outlaw)
And if you really think of other team names in the NBA:
Orlando Magic
Atlanta Hawks
Utah Jazz (taken from when the team was in New Orleans)
And many more to name. It can't get any worse than those names there.
Just like the New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Outlaws sounds good. It has a knack to it. This team won't have to be destitute of a new identity because they will create it when they move on in. The Outlaws vs. Mavericks just sounds like a good match up doesn't it? My only hope is that they get a good artist on the uniforms and logo for this team.
