Anybody around here in 1968 can tell you about the hype of the OKlahoma City Plainsmen of the Continental Football League. They played at Taft Stadium and the Plainsmen logo stayed on the front of the stadium until about 1972 or so. It was true-blue minor league football. I made most of the games and my biggest memory was meeting players of one the opposing teams at Shakey's Pizza on 39th street. I thought it was such a big deal I got their autographs (I was just a kid). One of the players was Kenny Stabler - who went on to have a long career with the Oakland Raiders in the NFL.
Edit here: I just discovered you can even buy a Plainsmen t-shirt or hoody on a site that sells new "retro clothing" for now-defunct professional sports teams.
Now that would be a cool name for the Sonics, OKC Plainsmen! That's a neat design and color format.
...this shortest straw has been pulled for you
As a graduate of Enid High School (also the Plainsmen), I agree!
I don't think that will help shed the hickish or barren land image some people have of our state.
Dang, I was hoping this was an announcement (finally) for the UFL.
